My hobby is restoring old banjos. I have several for sale, including an
English zither 5-string banjo, a pre-1890 Fairbanks, a Vega banjo-mandolin
(near mint), a Ludwig tenor (1927 - excellent) - more. I like to trade -

I have an old harmony that has been under the bed for at least 25 years.
It
caries a tune fairly well or did the last time I played it. I bought it
used
from a music store in Vestal NY about 1972 and picked for a few years,
until I
wacked myself in the eye with a thumb pick :-). I have often wondered
what it
might be worth. It shows some use but not abuse. Any expert ideas out
there???

The old Harmony banjos with the pot made out of bakelite and still made in
the good old USofA were a decent beginner banjo and still are. They came in
various models but all from the basic pot. Open back, then resonator, the
top of the line had twice as many hooks and nuts [the cheaper one just left
every other hole empty]. All the ones I have come across that havn't been
abused still have a straight neck. I would say the value for a 5 string
would be from $100 to $200. Don't even consider tha later Harmony stuff
made in the Orient, there is no value there.

I was in a shop in Belfast,NY recently and he had 2 old Harmony banjos.One had
all the brackets used and the other had 1/2 of the bracket holes
unused.Reminded me of my old Silvertone banjo that I got from Sears in the
60's.Some days I wish I had never gotten rid of that banjo,as I had so much fun
jamming with my best friend trying to imitate the Kingston Trio.I now own a
Baldwin Ode banjo and a Vega Folklore longneck banjo,but miss the simple times
when the Silvertone was my main instrument and life was easier.I have looked at
the import versions and they not impress me.Give me a good old USA made banjo
any day.
