I've read glowing reports of bang-for-the-buck for both of these brands on
this group. Which is generally preferred by members of this group, and why?
Are they as similar as two peas in a pod, or is it no-brainer, where one is
far better than the other? I'm talking about resonator banjos for
bluegrass, btw.

john, in my opinion it depends on which ones you are comparing. nothing
wrong with most of the gold tones.

having touched a bunch of these two brands....when you get to the goldstar
gf-85 and up......notably the gf-100.....the quality of the work is overall
much better. there is a new gf-200 series which is visually
stunning.....highly flamed. i suspect the workmanship is the same high
quality.

here is a link to pictures of it.....it is very mastertone looking. having
owned a bunch of mastertones....for the money, i don't think you could beat
that model if you were looking for mastertone look and feel without the
price. inlay pattern is like the scruggs standard (almost) i owned a few
years back.

exceptions to top notch quality can be goldstar tuners and tailpieces. i
have not personally seen issues with those, but people talk about that.
tuners and tail pieces are an easy and fairly cheap fix. overall, the necks
i have touched have been perfect......rim and pot assembly very good also.

my suggestion is to go out to www.banjohangout.org and look over the reviews
of both.

if you want a review of a goldstar that i have set up......you can go to
www.janetdavismusic.com and go to the testimonials page for the gf-85
machine. that thing barked like a granada. the bart veerman bridge was the
secret on that one.....it was a 5/8 teak/ebony....crowe spaced......thin or
"A" style bridge. if you go with that....you cannot miss.

write me if i can help.

One of my students has a new Goldstar GF-100 and I haven't seen anything
wrong with the tuners or tailpiece. It's a nice looking and good sounding
banjo.

Yes, I did have to do the setup when it came in but it was an easy setup.
I've seen some expensive banjos that required more work than this one did to
get them sounding good.

For my part, I've never met a Gold Tone I didn't like. I currently own
four of them, and the open backs are superb.

Also look into the Recording King line.

You really should be browsing around for answers in the
forums at
banjohangout.org

Have you stopped by there yet?

My choice is a Deering John Hartford (granadillo tone ring) I love it,
also have a Deering Vega (Old Time Wonder) There are other great banjo co's
out there, this is my prefernce...Also think of OME, Stelling, and Chuck Lee
who in my opinion makes the finest looking banjo made today...
I would not hesitate purchasing a Gold Tone, they are fine banjo's. Ask Bob
