Anybody know where i can get a good one? I have downloaded a Midi-to-wav
(free) program called "Timidity". I then exported as Midi, one of the tunes
i have written from "Tabledit", And, i must say that the reproduction from
Timidity is considerably better than the one produced by the o/s of my pc.
However, it just lacks that "true" Banjo tone.
I thought about *trying* to make one myself - but then i'm a banjo player!

Nic Durham.

Best banjo sound I ever had was when I had a SB AWE32 with a Yamaha DB50XG
daugther board attached (it knocked spots off my current SB live card on
that and other on other sounds. It also was far better than my own attempt
to try to sample a few banjo notes to get them into the SB AWE32 sound font
bank).... As far as I can tell anything involving MIDI is very synth
(software or hadware) dependant...

coincedence, liked my old Awe64 way better than my new sb live
as well and the Wave Studio (version 4) that came with it gets totally
confused trying to handle large wave files...

hi Nic

Ive got 2 really good synths and Ive got a sound library of over 2000
voices on my Korg, but have yet to hear on any synth a "true" banjo sound.
Or acoustic guitar for that matter. Electric oh yeah, got a couple great
lectric axes, and bass, well, they sound good too . But for banjos and
acoustical guitars something in the detonation and sustain, so far they
havent been able to duplicate that to my ears yet, but give em time I bet
they do. They can get close, but its still obvious its not the real mccoy.
You might see about finding someone with a sampler, and use your own banjo.
Say do they make samplers for pcs? Maybe they do I dont know.

good pickin to you
Michael

While on that sort of drift, I think my SB live is better than my older
AWE32 was for audio. To my annoyance, it didn't have the socket to take the
old daugther board to improve on MIDI though. I don't know but suspect it
might have been something Creative wanted to drop as that device at the time
I got the PC was around £50 and really (IMO) did put thier own built in
synth to shame.

Sometimes I toy with the idea of a new Yamaha card for my PC but I can't
justify say £300 for a card that would interest me for the amount I play
with MIDI and my own finances... I suppose another alternative would be to
go for a reasonable MIDI keyboard and hook up to the SB Live via the
joystick port.

Hi folks, Thanks for the information - i'm going to do some in-depth
research into the "live sampling" theory.

I'll let you know...

Best, Nic.

I guess it's pretty hard to change the strings or tighten the
head in in midi file :) What is really nice about writing a tab in
software like this that no matter how robotty or how computery the
music sounds like, and no matter that notes are not accented (they all
sound at the same volume) - the melody comes shining through. This is
especially handy for trying to figure out what weird tabs, or tabs of
songs you are not familiar with, are supposed to sound like.
Definately a great way for beginners to get going in a hurry and it
really drives home to point that even at lower speeds, when playing in
proper time is totally important and makes the melody jump out.
There's a lot of freeware midi players out there that let you speed up
or slow down the tempo and taking a tune, any tune, down to a tempo
that's within your playing ability so you can play along and is
ultimately more effective than trying to keep up with the annoying
clickclicks of a metronome.
Oops, sorry about railroading your original question Nic...

Regarding the comment

you can accent the notes in Tabledit using the 'Dynamics Pallet' Select all
and pick Mezzo Forte then go back through and one at a time jack up the
volume on the accent notes to Forte or even Forte Fortizzimo for super
accents.
