Sorry to barge in on your group like this ! I've just come into possession
of a banjo from the early 1900's (I don't know the exact year). It's marked
on the back "The New Windsor Patent Zither Banjo, A O Windsor maker 94
Newhall st Birmingham England". it also has it's original case. Has anyone
heard of this model before, and more importantly, (cue Antiques Roadshow
moment), is it worth anything. Any info would be much appreciated

If you bring it to the Old Time Festival in Gainsborough, Lincs 15-17 feb
2002, you'll meet more old banjo players than you could shake a stick at,
and also a few dealers. If you wanted to sell it or value it or learn how to
play it, that would definitely be your best starting point.
Details at http://www.pillard.demon.co.uk/foaotmad/
Cheers
Ray (Who'll definitely be there)

You might want to read Mike Stangers
"How to Sell a Banjo" which should be sub titled, " How to determine
sellable worth of a banjo" on my website at
http://banjobasics.virtualave.net/

I also just typed in Windsor zither banjo
into google and got this page.
http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/shops/shnott.htm

It lists 2 Windsor Zither banjos for sale from 250 to 360
From what I have read , they are considered well made banjos but also the
model T of banjos in England..

good pickin to you
Michael

Thanks for helping out a poor banjo virgin :)
I think I might clean it up, restring it, and have a bash myself. I play
guitar already so I'm sure (hope ??) I can get something musical out of it.

Hi, Me...
You're not barging- this is what we do on alt.banjo!
Your Windsor was made by a large maker of English zither banjos, and was
well regarded as making good instruments when the company was in
business.

There were a lot of different Windsor models, and the company also made
banjos in the traditional American form, which they called Regular
banjos. They made a lot of different models of these, too.

Windsor, like other makers, also made their banjos in several
varieties... 5-string, plectrum, tenor, mandolin banjo, guitar banjo,
etc. Any of these types could be ordered in any of their model series.

Which is the long way of saying "don't know what it's worth." A lot of
it's value depends on model, type of banjo, condition, age, and other
factors. Zither banjos aren't as well known as other designs, so I
suspect the market worth is inherently a little less, just due to modern
players general ignorance of zithers. However, the English market may be
much better, because the zithers were very popular there, and they are
better known there.

As with any old instrument, the true worth is what you get for a serious
offer, period. Any other estimate depends entirely on speculation, and
only a few of the best vintage dealers and repairmen can give you a
reliable appraisal on it's worth. Anything else is probably hype or
counterhype (as is most of Antiques Roadshow).
Regards,
Stanger

I have a Windsor, the Popular model. It's finicky to tune and sounds
kinda bright. You can listen to me play it on (yup, shameless self
pormotion but what the hey...):

Click on the tune Riverdale, that's the one I recorded playing the
Windsor, they seem to be well made. Sorry, I don't have a clue about
the value.
