Feed reindeer from the palm of your hand, feel their furry noses. This experience sells out quickly, advanced reservations are required.

The illness, which is related to mad cow disease, infects moose, deer, elk, and reindeer and can spread easily. The disease attacks the animal's brain, causing drooling, instability, lack of coordination, loss of fear of humans, among other symptoms.

While the USDA regulates the international movement of animals, the VADCS Office of Veterinary Services regulates the movement of animals into Virginia. According to the DWR, a permit is required to possess any type of deer in Virginia. So naturally, official permission was given upon the expected visit from Saint Nick and his famous reindeer.

In tonight's episode, we once again meet up with Santa on Christmas Eve. This year, he spent a little too long in the Sanderson household, and his reindeer accidentally carried on without him! Luckily, the Sanderson children were willing to help, and with a little Christmas magic they soon track down the reindeer to the most surprising place.

During this two-hour event, we invite you to come see live reindeer and learn about these wonderful, adaptive animals. Free winter-themed face painting and hot beverages will be provided, while supplies last. Appropriate for all ages. No advanced registration necessary.

The iconic antlers of the reindeer are used for multiple purposes. Males use their larger antlers to defend from predators and to impress potential mates. Females use their antlers to dig through snow and find food in the ground.

One aid in spotting food is some super-powered vision. Studies show that reindeer can see UV light, which may help them survive in the bright and UV-rich Arctic. UV, or ultraviolet light, is just outside the range of light visible to humans, with shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than what we can perceive. UV light can harm our eyes, but reindeer appear to be protected from such damage, and can use UV light to detect food sources or lurking predators in their snow-covered habitats.

Reindeer and their ranging habits affect whole ecosystems, and among the creatures who have come to benefit from their presence are us humans. In particular, the Indigenous Sámi people of Northern Europe, who inhabit Sápmi (or Lapland), a region spanning parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, have a very special relationship with the reindeer of those lands. For hundreds of years, Sámi have been living alongside the reindeer, undertaking traditional reindeer herding as far back as the 17th century, and domesticating a few draft animals and living off of meat and clothing from wild reindeer populations before then.

Indeed, the Sámi way of life revolves around reindeer. The traditional reindeer herding they practice is tied to the patterns of the seasons and the conditions of the environment. It is passed generationally among families, learned through experience as a herder comes to know the animals of the herd and respond to their needs. Unfortunately, the Sámi have been forced to struggle against impeding land restrictions, the cultural erasure of colonization, and hostile policies from the governments of the countries they inhabit. As mining and logging operations expand, there is less and less land for reindeer to graze, while at the same time warming conditions force reindeer to range larger areas to get adequate food.

One night, the Sprites of the Northern Lights - a group of singing sprites who fly around the North Pole - witness the birth of a baby reindeer named Rudolph, who has an unusual red, shiny nose. Later, Rudolph and his parents, Blitzen and Mitzi, meet up with Rudolph's three uncles - Dasher, Comet, and Cupid. Cupid tickles Rudolph and triggers his glowing nose, which draws attention and causes Rudolph to be mocked. Meanwhile, two of Santa Claus's elves, Doggle and Boone, cross the ice bridge of the wicked Ice Queen, Stormella, accidentally destroying several ice statues while delivering Santa's mail. When Stormella finds out, she demands Santa hand them over to her. When he refuses, she closes her bridge as punishment and warns that if anyone crosses it, she will create a blizzard so strong it will stop Santa from delivering presents to children around the world on Christmas Eve.

A year later, Rudolph starts school, where he is ridiculed by everyone including his mean-spirited cousin and Cupid's son, Arrow for wanting to be among Santa's reindeer, the Flyers, just like his own father, despite his nose. The only ones who don't tease him are his teacher, Mrs. Prancer and a young doe named Zoey. After running away from school, Santa meets Rudolph and reassures him that his nose is grand and that to be a Flyer, a reindeer needs to have a true heart, a trait that he sees in Rudolph.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerHad a very shiny nose,And if you ever saw it,You would even say it glows. All of the other reindeerUsed to laugh and call him names; They never let poor RudolphJoin in any reindeer games.
