Hello,

I currently have a party as follows, and am thinking about whom to
remove from it when taking in the next new member (Dynaheir):

- Myself (elven mage)
- Ajantis
- Kivan
- Minsc
- Imoen
- Branwen

With Imoen and Branwen having special roles (Thief and Cleric), it
should be one of the fighting types. I like Ajantis, and I think he's
a valuable party member.

Minsc only comes paired with Dynaheir, but then, there are a lot of
fights, and I could let him die (I won't actively try to kill him,
though. This wouldn't be right for my party. But I could refrain from
loading a saved game should something happen to him ...)

Kivan is a good bowman, but then - why not remove him ? I seem to
remember having read several opinions on Kivan being better than Minsc
(including some hints at some "special items" usable only(?) by him
later in the game, though I have no idea what those might be -
crossbow of speed ? Both could use that one ...), but I'm not so sure
when I compare them directly.

Close Combat : Minsc is better (STR 18/93)
Ranged       : About the same -Kivan DEX 17 -Minsc DEX 18 w/ Gauntlets
Do elves (Kivan) in BG get +1 to hit with longbows and
longswords?
HP           : hm, well, Kivan is somewhat better here.
Flavor       : Minsc wins hands down
Weapon Skills: Both level 4, Kivan has 5, Minsc 6 (!?) proficiency
points
Special Abil.: Kivan Charm Animal, Minsc Berserk *shrug*

So, whom to keep ? (maybe I should keep Minsc for flavor. But then,
Kivan keeps being congratulated by Branwen and he himself seems to
admire Ajantis ... it's nice to hear them clapping each other on the
shoulder for being such good companions all the time :))

So, what do you think ?
Michael

I think that basing your Group on Alignment criteria is sensible. Kivan is
Lawful Evil (I think) and Minsc is Neutral Good so it depends on the state
of your party. When my reputation hit 18 I took all the equipment off the
evil characters and kicked them out (before they left by themselves) and now
it`s at 20 I only really want Good characters in the party...

Kivan is nuetral good, I'm fairly sure. Other advantages are his racial
enemy bonus vs gnolls, and of course he's far better off with a halberd (I
found a +1 halberd somewhere) than a spear, as this uses the same
proficiency for more damage. The cool items he can use include..... (Spoiler
follows)

A longbow of marksmanship - +1 thaco, +5 damage!
Bracers of archery - +1 thaco & damage
Boots of stealth (try setting him to theif1 or 2 script so he uses his
innate ranger stealth ability)

In addition, giving him one of the many +1 maces/flails or morning stars
(better) makes him handy against skeletons and the various 'slimes' which
take half or no damage from sharp weapons.

IMHO Minsc is a liability - I was forever bailing him out of gang fights and
wasting heal-ups on him. Thank god he went ga-ga in my game & went to join
David Koresh in the happy hamster spacecraft in the sky!

I think Minsc is hilarious. I laugh at his little comments, "Boo likes the
forest." Hehehe

"Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes..." Yeah, he's a little touched in
the head, but he's an extremely strong fighter. Being that his AC isn't
that good naturally, I would certainly opt for a one-handed weapon, 'tho.
Plus, he's a ranger, allowing spell usage eventually.

You will have to drop Kivan. Minsc and Dynahier are a *Pair*. If you drop one,
the other leaves too. SO if you add Dynahier to the party, and then drop Minsc,
he'll likely take Dynahier out with him.

Unless, of course, He's not *in* your party when you add her...
...or alive...

I Personally think Minsc is the most amusing character in the game. He's a lot
like the Tick, and Kivan whines alot. Also, they both have personal Quests.
Minsc's is rescue Dynahier, Kivan is Kill Tazok. Considering Tazok is on of the
Final BOSSES flunkies....
I personally Kept Minsc. I got him early enough to make him good with bows.
