I recently aquired Baldurs Gate II + Expansion pack - now I was wondering:
My character in Baldurs Gate TOSC, is level 7 or 8 and really can't go much
further in levels in that game, but that is pretty high. So what happens if
I import him into BGII? The levels in that game are far higher, does it take
into account how high my level is (i.e. gives me the appropriate level in
BGII) or would it somply put me in as the same level (i.e. 7/8)?
I hope I've made sense
Thanx

IIRC, when you import your BGI character into BGII the XP will be set to
approx 110,000 (which equals level 7 fighter) regardless of the actual XP of
the imported character. I think the only thing you retain from your original
character are the stats (eg str, dex, con etc).
nope. imported from tosc chars xp is set to 161,000 (the limit in tosc)
iirc a thief can reach lvl 10 with that cap
gnow
If you have imported the character from BG1:
Your Experience Points total will be set to 89,000 (if coming in
from vanilla BG) or 161,000 (if importing from Tales Of The Sword
Coast), as this was the XP cap in each case.
Your stats will remain the same.
Your equipment will be taken away from you during the first
cutscene, as you begin the game in prison. One or two items *may* be
seen again in the game: the rest will never be seen again. However,
there is considerably better equipment available in BG2.
Your companions, that you were travelling with at the end of BG1
(or Tales of the Sword Coast) will disappear, along with all their
equipment. It is assumed that, whoever you may have been with at the end
of BG1, you have since then been adventuring with a party consisting of
yourself, Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir (even if you left
some of them behind, or they got killed or even gibbed, during the
course of BG1: it is assumed that they were raised from the dead, and
joined your adventuring party, and any other NPCs left it.) As you will
discover, two of these people are now dead, and the other three will be
available to join your party right from the start, escaping from prison.
Their equipment, like yours, has been taken, and will mostly not be seen
again.
The fate of some of the other NPCs from BG1 is discovered in BG2...
- Branwen and Xan have opted for the quiet life, and entered the
service of Duke Belt of Baldur's Gate (and so they appear in the
Tutorial, but not in the main game itself.)
- Montaron and Xzar have travelled to Athkatla, spying on behalf of the
Zhentarim (the evil organisation to which they belong.) They have fallen
foul of the local branch of the Harpers, which is hardly surprising as
the Harpers and Zhentarim are mortal enemies (hence the fact that you
will sometimes have fighting between the two pairs Jaheira/Khalid and
Xzar/Montaron, in BG1: it seems to be led by Jaheira and Xzar, who seem
in each case to be the senior member of the partnership - Montaron seems
to be able to coexist quite happily with Jaheira and Khalid, in the
absence of Xzar, and I think Khalid also isn't going to fight Xzar or
Montaron unless Jaheira is around.)
- Coran and Safana have met, and now live together in one of the
southern forests (which you can find during Chapter 6). You may end up
having to save one or both of them from attack.
- Faldorn, the Druid you got the chance to pick up in Cloakwood, has
joined the Shadow Druids (or perhaps she was always a member? It was
among the Shadow Druids that you first met her), and is using the power
of nature for evil ends, and you will have to kill her eventually.
- Garrick, the bard of Beregost, has been hired by an ugly gnome to aid
in wooing a noble lady, and is fairly incompetent at it... but will have
a happy ending of sorts (i.e. you will hear that, at the wedding of the
gnome and the noble lady, he managed to get off with one of the
bridesmaids.) The scenes involving him are just a little cameo, outside
the entrance to the Hall of the Radiant Heart (an order of paladins,
knights and priests, devoted to noble ends.)
- Tiax, the megalomaniacal gnome cleric/thief, has gone completely mad
and is incarcerated in Spellhold, the mages' prison. He cannot join your
party, but will fight alongside you in one particular fight.
- Quayle, the gnomish illusionist/cleric, has joined a travelling
circus, and needs rescuing (though he will not join your party: but he
has become the mentor and adopted-uncle of someone who can.)
- Viconia, the Drow-elven cleric, has also travelled south to Athkatla,
after meeting with misfortune near Beregost (the nature of this
misfortune is something that you may or may not find out), but has been
captured by racist fanatics and needs rescuing *again*. (Just as in BG1,
when a Flaming Fist officer was after her just because she is a Drow,
not for any crimes she has or has not committed - despite her Evil
alignment.) She can join your party.
- Edwin, the Red Wizard, has also travelled to Athkatla, and entered
the service of the Shadow Thieves as the resident mage of the secondary
thieves' guildhall, run by one Mae'Var. He can join your party.
- I have not yet discovered any sign of Yeslick, Kivan, Shar-Teel,
Eldoth, Skie Silvershield or Ajantis, though I am told that Ajantis's
fate can be found out, and that he is dead.

2 ways
a patch available from baldurdash prevent your char being stripped upon
import; alternatively, as has been explained before, press i while importing
the char to enter the inventory, strip your char - put kit on floor, when
imoen rescues you tool up before leaving cell.
gnow
Yes, but it's considered a cheat.
(1) Start a new game of BG2 by importing the final-save from a
character who happens to be carrying Spider's Bane.
(Note: The "Final Save" of BG1 is made at the moment before
entering the Temple of Bhaal, not after the death of Sarevok: so if you
*really* want to be cheezy you can load your main-character protagonist
up with all the items that you really want to keep - any or all of Full
Plate +1, Ankheg Platemail, Robe of the Archmagi, Spiders Bane,
Varscona, +1 Composite Longbow, Eagle Short Bow, +3 Sling, +3
Quarterstaff, Drizzt's armour and scimitars (although I think these will
disappear anyway), Arrows of Detonation or Dispelling, Gauntlets of
Dexterity, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, Helmet of Defence, Helm of Balduran,
Boots of Speed, Boots of Stealth, Ring of Wizardry, Ring of Sune, Shadow
Armor +3, Short Sword of Backstabbing +3, +1/+4 Large Shield, the Golden
Pantaloons, Amulet of Metaspell Influence, etc. - as much as you can
carry. ;-) Then go into the Temple of Bhaal, and *stop* the moment you
get inside the doors. Transfer your equipment back to its proper owners,
and *then* do the final fight...)
(2) As you start the game, you have a split second before the first
cutscene arrives: in which you can hit the spacebar (to pause the game),
then hit the Inventory button on the left side of the screen, then drop
everything. And I mean *everything*, including what you're wearing.
(3) During the first cutscene, you are assumed to be robbed of all
the equipment that your character was wearing or carrying. If you're
carrying nothing, of course nothing can be stolen...
(4) And you can pick up the equipment again, once the cutscene ends
and the actual game starts, as you'll be standing on top of it.
Distribute it around the four people you meet early on (yourself, Imoen,
Minsc and Jaheira), as you see fit.
(5) Some of the items will have changed a little in transit. For
instance, the Two-Handed Sword +3 "The World's Edge" that you found in
Durlag's Tower in TotSC will have changed into the "Harbringer", which
occasionally shoots a fireball when it hits an enemy: some bows may have
lost there pluses to damage (I seem to recall the Eagle Bow having +2 to
dam as well as to hit): and the +3 Platemail that you find in Durlag's
Tower will have lost its description, as will the plain Sling +3 that
you also find there. The Ring of Wizardry will no longer double your
complement of 1st-level spells, instead giving you one extra of 5th, 6th
and 7th-level spells. This is a clear indication that this sort of
behaviour was meant to be an easter-egg for cheaters, rather than
standard practice.
(The ease with which it could have been prevented indicates that
this *is* an easter-egg rather than a bug: the mechanism by which the
equipment is stolen from the player is to consider the player as
possessing it, then have it removed in the "The Party Has Lost An Item"
sense, instead of simply refusing to allow the player to bring it in at
all, which seems like it would have been pretty trivial to do - given
that Jaheira, Minsc and Imoen don't keep the hit points or equipment you
rolled up for them in BG1, and Imoen is automatically assumed to have
been dual-classed to a mage - even if you finished BG1 and TotSC with
her as a 10th-level Thief, she's assumed to be a 7th-level thief dualled
to 8th-level mage when you get into BG2. Evidently this was easier than
reading the hit points they might have had if they were in your party at
the end of BG1: which indicates that it would also have been easier to
simply strip the player of equipment and force starting with an empty
savefile consisting only of the character's stats, rather than allow its
importation and *then* remove it during the cutscene.)
Also, some of the items that your character was carrying or wearing
*may* appear later in the initial dungeon, without your having to do
this cheat and drop the items before the first cutscene begins. (This is
possibly another reason why the player is assumed to be imported still
carrying the items and have them stripped from him during the first
cutscene.) I think there's one place where you normally find a longsword
+1, but it'll be replaced with the weapon you were wielding in the
final-save instead - which may be a way of saving Spiders Bane without
cheating: and there's certainly somewhere where the Helm of Balduran and
Amulet of Metaspell Influence will turn up, if you were wearing or
carrying these at the time of importation (or maybe they're there all
the time.) One thing is certain: if your main character was carrying the
Golden Pantaloons in the final save, they will be available in the very
first screen, in a secret trapped compartment in the room guarded by the
Jailkeeper Golem. Take them and keep them with you, and the Silver
Pantaloons you can find in BG2, and the Bronze Pantalettes you can find
in Throne of Bhaal, for a *seriously* nice easter egg... ;-)
Jonathan.
Sorry, got my math wrong in the previous post - I was going by my F/M/T
which I imported from a BGI/ToSC game into BGII and the XP was set to 53,666
for each class - which adds up to 160,998 in total and not 110,000 which, of
course, is only approx 2 times 53,666, duuuuurrrr :-)
Anyway, yes, you can keep your Spiders Bane but only if you want to exploit
a bug/cheat in the game....

After you have imported your BGI character and clicked the 'Accept' button
(or something similar) the very first 'Loading' screen is shown - as soon as
this screen has completed but before the cut-scene starts, press the pause
key, look in your inventory and you'll see all your equipment from BGI. Drop
all the equipment on the ground. Unpause the game and let the cut scene
complete. Once you're back in normal playing mode you'll be able to pick up
your equipment.
Alternatively, just use ShadowKeeper to add the Spiders Bane to your
inventory, a lot easier!
But is it possible in BGII to adventure on your own (like I have done with
the BG TOSC)?
Thanx again

Yes, just as it was possible to adventure on your own in BG1. The
game has even been won in this manner (one of the most famous examples
being by Kevin "Baldurdash" Dorner, with a solo mage called
Elmonster...) It's just ferociously difficult, as it also was in BG1.
And if you're not a thief who can disarm traps, you'll just have to
absorb the damage from most traps and avoid the ones which cause instant
death, if you know where they are (which you don't.)
However, chapters 2-4 of the game *do* revolve around rescuing
Imoen, whether you like it or not, and whether you want her (or anyone
else) in your party or not. (This is the purpose of a certain item she
is automatically given and automatically wears, in Chapter 1 of BG2 -
"Imoen's Belt". It's a game-mechanism hack that makes sure she can't be
"killed" or gibbed before escaping from the original dungeon - if she
suffers injury that would normally kill her, she will instead disappear
from the party with text that indicates she's making a run for the
surface without the rest of you. This is because she's needed alive by
the game, for future cutscenes and for rescue in Chapter 4. (This was
something, apparently, that the game designers coded in before they
found a way to simply code in player (or monster) states that didn't
require items, such as the "unkillable at this time" state: so they had
to give her an item which rendered her "unkillable at this time", and
make it non-removable like Edwin's amulet.)
Once you've rescued her, you can leave her where you found her. It
would be pretty cruel, though, to leave her in an asylum designed for
insane wizards, especially after having her soul ripped from her while
leaving her body still "alive" and functional. (It would be, well, a
particularly soulless action - which, in the condition, would be fairly
appropriate to the player, who is also in the same situation...)
Chapters 5-7 hinge on getting back what was stolen (first for Imoen,
then for you), and finally tracking down and destroying the evil
sorcerer who did it, and his vampire friend...
By the way: The XP cap in BG2 is 2,950,000 unless you have Throne
of Bhaal installed, in which case it's 8 million.
Jonathan.

Yes. It's been done, often, though never by me.
It will put you at the standard level for a BG2 starting character. That should
be at least 8-9, for a single classed character, but won't be higher than 10.
I think Ajantis is one of the ogre/paladins that attack the party in the
Windspear hills.
By the way, Xan gets a mention in a journal in Icewind Dale.

I don't know if this necessarily follows; it's possible that the
designers simply changed their mind about letting PCs keep their
items, and never got around to reprogramming the beginning scene.

Not quite. New characters and vanilla BG1 characters start with 89,000,
gaining extra if required. And TotSC characters who reached the cap start
with all their 161,000. But TotSC characters who only reached e.g. 140,000
start with the number they previously had.

Yes, I'd noticed. Your point? Jonathan implied (either accidentally, or because
he mistakenly believes it to be true) that any character imported from a TotSC
game would have his/her XP rounded up to 161,000, but that's not the case.
* Any TotSC character imported with less than 89,000 XP starts with 89,000.
* Any TotSC character imported with XP between 89,000 and 161,000 starts with
that number.
* Any TotSC character imported with 161,000(*) XP starts with 161,000.
(*) or more? I've never seen what happens for XP-cap-removed
characters.
