I have been using NovaBACKUP 7.5 with Windows XP SP2 for about a year.
When I tried to run the program today, I got the message "Cannot
connect to the Backup service." Then, "The service is not available.
Please make sure it is enabled and running."

So far I have tried: rebooting; repairing the application with the
Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" function; deleting the
program, rebooting, and reinstalling the program; and doing a system
restore from a checkpoint made the day before my last successful
backup. None of it helped.

What has gone wrong? How do I fix it?

Try searching for keywords "connect service" in their online forum:

I have been working on this problem on and off since your reply, but I
believe I've hit a dead end.

The forum did not provide any useful information. Some of the posts
on this topic boil down to "Make sure that NSEngine is running." (I
know it's not running -- the problem is how to fix it.) Others list
security and authoring programs that are known to cause problems for
NovaBACKUP. My system has a couple of them, but they have been in
place longer than NovaBACKUP has, and never caused problems before, so
they seem unlikely to be the cause of this trouble.

I tried contacting NovaSTORE's chat support service, which is
available without a support agreement, but so far they have not been
helpful.

I finally decided that my only option was to restore my last full
backup to an alternate system partition. I did that, but found that
the restored backup was not usable. Each time Windows starts it
displays a message saying that "autochk cannot be found," and then it
reboots, endlessly.

My next options seem to be (1) to rebuild my system from scratch, or
(2) to buy a new copy of NovaBACKUP and insist that the support people
help me get it to work during the 30-day free support period. Option
1 would be a tremendous amount of work, and at this point I'm not sure
that option 2 would be prudent. Do I really want a shiny new copy of
a backup program that creates unrestorable backups?

Any other suggestions you have will be most welcome!

If you can spare the time before starting that full rebuild, register for
the forum and ask there. That seems to be the only place there was
anything resembling useful advice for your predicament, and it appears to
be free.

I did so, back around 23 June. I never received a reply.

Just today I got a reply to another message that I posted about part
of my most recent experience. It came from a fellow junior member,
not a NovaSTOR staffer or other expert, but it suggested a reason why
one of my recovery strategies failed, which is, at least, plausible.
I'm going to check it out when I have time to work on this problem
again, probably next weekend.

I have used Novaback's products for about a decade! It has been consistent in that it craps out regularly. The issues are all over the place! It fails to perform disaster backups, it will crash at 80-90% of a back-up. It doesn't restore data backups reliably. It locks up at arbitrary points. The purported free technical support invariably results in hang-ups. It will not perform an actual disaster recovery onto a single 2GB USB WD2GB media device..(It insists on having a single DVD disk for the voodoo it wants to perform before it will start (if it actually does start) the full backup that is so critical to businesses.
)
and the list goes on. I have given up on your product. I am certain that there is a real product that is not mysteriously tied to McAfee's equally useless product(and their affiliated applications that fail to work, introduce unwanted malware, tracking software, and other information theft software, and other products I don't want, damage my hardware and legitimate software and finally without any notification installs software that rebuilds itself if one can find a way to get rid of the stuff in the first place.

I have just ordered a system based on a Unix based O.S. and also took and also bought an Apple O.S. based system. They aren't top of the mark units but certainly meet the mid-point performance levels of ALL Microsoft offerings.
