I am interested in it for image backups and drive cloning in
case of a full failure.
I am not comfortable with Acronis 11 because of the many
bugs, bad backups, non-verifies etc, that keep being
reported. I am not interested in Ghost 14 because of bloat.
I'm presently using Ghost 9 but this will not work on Vista
or Windows 7, if we ever see it.
Input appreciated.

Is this your own experience? If not, please direct me to the relevant link.
I have been using Acronis 11 for making images of my (Vista) laptop and
(W2K) PC on external USB hard drive. No problems at all. Also verified:
'OK'.

This is the tech support forum for Acronis. It has more traffic than
this N.G.
I took it in the shorts with Acronis too. They wanted me to do a
registry hack to disable one core of my CPU in order to get Acronis to
behave.

Thanks, I'll start reading asap.
I have to add that there are a lot of TI options I haven't used yet, so
possibly I haven't hit any potential bugs yet.

Using TI on a pentium4 PC and also on an Intel dual core notebook...
I use TI 9 on a Win 2000 system.
And TI 11 on a Vista system
I've not been a fan of TI, but TI is the only image backup of which I am
aware, that provides the functionality I require and does proper
incremental/differential backups.(see
http://forums.hardwareguys.com/ikonboard.cgi?s=4492619c5fa1ffff;act=ST;f=13;t=4573).
Some folkes seem to like Shadow Protect.
I helped StorageCraft locate a bug in version 2, so I havea free license for
version 3.
However version 3 would notwork on my Windows 2000 system.
I explained the problem (Storage Craft has/had real tech suppor tfolkes
particiapating in their forums), and a fix is supposedly in 3.1. But I have
not yet had a chance to try it.
The Current release of TI is not the first. It is the second release of
Version 11.

For my money (and I did spend my money), TI is too bloated with dog and
pony crap. Hidden partitions, VM partitions, modifications to the MBR,
etc.. I ended up with a damaged MBR after removing TI from my system. I
currently am using Retrospect mainly because of it's simplicity. It's
not the perfect app either, but I am able to use it successfully.

TI has a tech support person who pops up once in a while, but he never
offers a solution to anything. He will ask for a ton of logs, etc., and
then the thread just dies. If a solution is ever offered, it must be by
personal email, because it doesn't appear in the threads.

I suppose most of these bug reports concern pre - 11 versions.

That's an achievement. In fact all users 'help locate bugs' in software just
by using it, but most of them get nothin for it...
Yes, but even tI states that SEcure Zone, etc. should be used.
Such features do not belong in the product, as the inexperienced masses get
sucked into using such inappropriate features.

I neve rlet tI touch the MBR.

I use to use Retrospect.
The only useful backup is an IMAGE backup to an external drive.
File based backups have no use that I can see.

It's more than one person, and both genders.
I am not at all pleased with TI's support.
With ShadowProtect, I posted to what was then a very inactive SP user forum.
I booted them in the arse, and others joined in, waking up StorageCraft.
Haven't checked recently, but forum was active last I checked.
I had a number of long, productive phone calls with their tech support, in
clear English.
This might not be so easy with TI, due to native language differences.
No, see http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=186031.

Yes, but in my case, I got into the technical nitty gritty, more than most
users could.
A free version of most any software is not sufficient compensation.
