If you can accept the crap rubber monster, why complain about the
bullets? Mind you, worth a smile seeing Robert Eglund looking at the
monster's big, nasty claws...

Yep that's exactly what they implied, that if you put several bullets
down a tube blow high pressure steam up said tube you will be able to
kill a bad actor in a crappy rubber suit........
It would be an understatement to say that this was not B5's greatest
hour!
Is it me or is B5 starting to seem like it's counting the hours and
filling in time until the next arc point? or trying to span out a
number of small arc points over the required amount of episodes to
make a season, baring in mind that the last two episodes could have
quite happily been squshed together into one reasonable episode if we
didn't have the "pop video promo" for about ten minutes in Walkabout
and removed all that Garibaldi and the Strange "bullshit" cult from
Grey 17.....
ho hum never mind I'm sure it's just a small flaw in an otherwise
blinding series!
Oi, what about spoiler space?
I'll stick some in here just in case.

I couldn't figure that one out, either.
And that alien must have been one of the least convincing so far on
the series. Well, OK, I admit that the Na'Grath (spelling?) geezer in
season 1 was pretty laughable, but they had the good sense to drop
that character. But the one today doesn't even come close to the
stunning CGI beasty in season 2 with the technomages (episode title
escapes me at the mo).
Loved the bit with Marcus and Neroon at the end. He just can't pass up
the chance for a wise-crack, can he?

I think they must have taken hints from the book "How to make an
unconvincing alien" by the producers of "Space: Above & Beyond".
Rather implausible - why would they go off in sequence front to back
(rather than blow the pipe apart and take his hands with it!)

I just watched this again and noticed Garibaldi said something to the
effect of ' This might kill it if it doesn't kill us first'. Perhaps
he was reading this newsthread fetched back by a wandering portion of
B4?
Errm, don't know if anyone has tried attaching a nail to the base of a
shotgun cartridge and throwing it. If it lands on the nail... :-)
I presume a high pressure jet of steam could have the same effect as the
firing pin of a gun, though how he put all the bullets in and fired them
off one by one without an explosion is still beyond me. Alternatively,
the heat could ignite the powder in the bullets, killing Garibaldi in
the ensuing explosion.
P.S. as for the Gorn / Zorn / Zarn, looked a bit like predator, but
should have looked more like Alien (IMVHO)

This one is for the British viewers.
Was it just me, or did Robert Englund do a very good Kenny Everett
impersonation? I kept waiting for him to break into Sid Snot, or Cupid

Oh yeah, and in response to the gun thing. Who cares, it's only make

A few points:
1. This groups is available to people outside the country and is read
my many US viewers. Perhaps you are new to the group. If you are then
you will have missed our rantings about US readers posting unmarked
spoilers. After all that we can't exactly go and do it ourselves.
Anyway, they'll get season 4 starting in about November, and they will
start discussions about the news eps. Then when someone goes and posts
an unmarked spoiler we can't really complain if we've been doing it
ourselves.
2. The group is *targetted* at the UK, so people can take into account
our airing schedules. It is not exclusive to the UK and no countries
are excluded.
3. Someone may have recorded an episode and not seen it yet.
4. S4C, the Welsh version of Channel 4, is about two weeks behind
channel 4.
5. Spoiler space is just netiquette!!!
That's why I pointed it out. :-)
Definitely agree... Some parts of the recent episodes have been promising
ie Neroon justified opinion of Delenn and the schism and some have been naff,
the monster from grail revisited.
The techie claimed she had searched through all levels and couldn't find him.
This is just a weak deus ex machina to get Garibaldi involved. Suddenly he
finds this mysterious Grey 17 that no one has found before. Oh dear. This is
another example of JMS's off days. We know the following:
a) the station is short on space : so why aren't even the disused locations
not pressed into service?
b) they need money to modernise their defenses and admin. Even more reason to
put every square inch of the station into use.
c) 250,000 sentient beings can easily cause a lot of mayhem. Surely security
must a file several gigs big of people mysteriously dissapearing around grey
sector!
Result : Interest 1 (Neroon 14) Bad Ideas 2 (Monster 13 pen JMS 34)
Chris.

Now you mention it, yes. At the time, he reminded me more of Robin

I didn't see the episode you're referring to--but are you sure the
bullets were explosive? Bullets in regular guns (since I'm a Yank, of
*course* I'd know all about guns! <g>) don't explode--the explosive is
just the propellant that hurls the shell out of the barrel and into
the whatever-it-is-you're-shooting. If there was a buildup of steam
pressure, that could act as a propellant just as effectively as the
gunpowder going off....

Hey, we got Kenny Everett in the US, too! At least a couple PBS
stations did.... I got a howl out of seeing everyone over here go gaga
for IN LIVING COLOR's "fly girls", having seen "Hot Gossip" on Kenny
Everett.... <g> And w/Robert Englund, you never know--maybe he *was*
impersonating Kenny Everett!

Um, excuse me, but the reason we're all B5 fans in the first place is
because JMS doesn't usually take that cavalier attitude towards his
plots. Of course, if he's written all of Season 3 in addition to the
last several episodes of Season 2, it's likely he's not exactly
tracking properly anymore....

Thank you for your consideration of non-UK viewers as well as UK

Everett.... <g>

Then get a welsh news group or complain to SC4 to keep up with the rest

Spoiler space IS netiquette in certain circumstances. However your
points above lead to the situation where every posting to every babylon
5 newsgroup in the world would have a thread title of SPOILER and no one
would know what the hell the thread was about. You might as well give
up and go home.
Even if I had put
Garibaldi's gun - can anybody explain ? (SPOILER)
and then left spoiler space, the fact that I had put "Garibaldi's gun -
can anybody explain?" in the title could be interpretted as a spoiler
just like the infamous "KOSH IS DEAD" thread title. The title of the
thread it self is a spoiler.
I think this is an agree to disagree one. If you know of any more
official guidelines on newsgroup posting please let me know and I will
read digest and consider them.

What Welsh newsgroup?
You can't have it both ways. First you say it's a UK group so it's
tough luck to anyone outside the UK. Now you are saying it's tough
luck to people *inside* the UK.

I don't think your title and the "Kosh is dead" case are really the
same thing. Your title didn't really give anything away.

Probably. I wasn't really having a go at you, but it's just that we
have tried to make the effort to observe netiquette since we got ahead
of the US in the hope that they will reciprocate when they get season
4 later in the autumn.

In summary there is no reason to *not* put spoiler space in. It's no
great hardship to press ENTER 20-odd times, and it is just a matter
showing consideration for other readers.
Anyway, I think I've made my opinions known, so that's the last I'm
going to say.
Actually it would depend a lot on the steam pressure, if it was too high
the cartridges would just fly out of the end before igniting the
propellent in the bullets, but otherwise it would take a lot longer for
the propellent to get to an explosive temperature using a low steam
pressure. Probably too long for Garibaldi & R.Englund's character.
--
Noel.
I think the whole scene was rubbish.
A bullet needs to be contained within a breach so that the expanding gases
released by the burning propellant overcomes the resistance of the crimp on
the cartridge that holds the bullet in place, BEFORE the cartridge
explodes.
If the bullet was not held in a breach, the burning propellant would cause
the bullet to be thrust forward by the expanding gases and the casing to be
thrust backwards with equal force. So, if the bullet cartridge contained
enough propellant to still fire the bullet with enough force to kill the
creature, even though it wasn't directed i.e. the casing contained so that
the only direction for expansion is along the barrel, then Garbaldi would
have shot himself in the chest with the cartridge.
Apart from that, the first bullet would have been cooked off by the steam,
which would have ignited the next in line's primer as it tried to explode,
which would in turn would ignite the next, and so on. All of those bullets
trying to get out of the end of that tube in front of an expanding gas
cloud traveling at about the speed of sound would defiantly make the tube
explode. Not fire off one at a time.
Sorry my belief wasn't suspended that far!!
