*** US Airways 737 fumes or smoke in cabin send 7 to hospital
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A USAirways flight reporting fumes or smoke
in the cabin made an emergency landing Friday morning and seven
people were taken to hospitals. The passengers were given medical
attention after reporting distress such as difficulty breathing or
chest pain. Flight 1177 was bound for Chicago from Baltimore, said
Lester Coffman, executive director of the airport. It had 88
passengers and a crew of five. The Fort Wayne airport was notified of
a problem aboard the aircraft at 9:20 a.m., Coffman said. The plane
landed safely 12 minutes later.

*** AGIFORS meets in Istanbul
Conference announcement: AGIFORS Operations Control & Ground Resources
Conference '99, hosted by Turkish Airlines, will be held on 18 - 21 April
1999 at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey. Invitation letter, agenda
and registration forms are available online.

*** Newark, JKF and LaGuardia hit with cancellations
A second day of icy conditions forced the cancellation of flights
at all three major New York City area airports on Friday. American
Continental, United, and Delta among others, had canceled early
flights. In Boston, Logan International Airport closed for a time
early on Friday because airlines were having trouble de-icing planes.

*** Executives Up In The Air
China, as an ultimate incentive to solve the millennium bug computer
problem, has ordered its airline executives to take a flight on January
1, 2000, the Financial Times said. The ministry directive coincides with
a push by Beijing to minimize the risk of chaos if computer systems and
electronics fail to recognize the date change from December 31, 1999 to
January 1, 2000. The danger to aircraft safety from the millennium bug
has reportedly made some airlines consider whether they should ground
all flights late on December 31.

*** Former airline bomber killed
A former leader of the Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf who
later became a government spy was killed Friday by a lone gunman
in the southern Philippines, police said. Edwin Angeles, formerly
the third-ranking leader of the Abu Sayyaf, was shot repeatedly on
the outskirts of Isabela where the rebel group is based. Angeles
also reportedly told Philippine intelligence officials that the
Abu Sayyaf had links with Ramzi Yousef, the convicted mastermind
of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York. Yousef
also allegedly plotted unsuccessfully to kill Pope John Paul II
during his visit to Manila in 1995 and planned to bomb U.S. airlines
flying over the Pacific. He was blamed in the bombing of a Philippines
Airlines plane en route to Japan in December 1994 that killed a
Japanese man. The military and police expect the group to escalate
its violent attacks after the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

*** Failure of state-run Chinese trust may hurt Cathay Pacific
China's standing with investors and banks is one of the first casualties
in the multibillion-dollar collapse of a major state-run investment trust.
The failure of Guangdong International Trust and Investment Corp. could
make credit harder to get at a time when China needs foreign investment
to weather growing domestic problems and the Asian financial crisis. GITIC's
failure also hurt the appeal of red-chips, which range from small provincial
firms to giants like CITIC Pacific, a part-owner of Cathay Pacific.

* United Airlines plans to end its daily service to and from
Delhi, India, on April 4, because of disappointing profitability,
the airline said late Thursday. The airline also decided to end
the service ahead of an expected seasonal slowdown during the
summer in India, a spokesman for UAL CORP, United's parent
company, said. United currently has once-a-day service between
Hong Kong and Delhi and between Delhi and London. United is
considering eventually resuming service to Delhi directly from the
United States, if it is technically feasible, the spokesman said.
Such a flight would have to go over the North Pole, through
Russian airspace and over high mountains, the spokesman said.
