What's the best radar detector one can buy? There are so many on the
market I don't know which to choose from.

And some cops are now using radar-detector-detectors

Seems like I have heard that the best device to use now is a
RADAR-detector-detector-detector. If one even exists.

I remember years ago my Mother was stopped in South Carolina by a cop
who turned his radar gun on when he heard a car coming.

So I haven't had much faith in then ever since.

So if you have a radar detector that you truely beleive in, let us now
about it.

Please reply publically. Thanks.

I hate to sound like a smartass, but, I threw away a perfectly good

5-10 mph over the posted limit and turn on something soothing on the
radio that keeps me distracted from how slowly things seem to be
going. Haven't had a ticket since.

I have a Uniden Wideband w/lazer. Saved me lots of money. Sure you can
still get a speeding ticket with a Radar Detector, you just have a
better chance with one. If your the only car on the road, and the cop
has a K-band or lazer gun, you're dead meat. If other cars are ahead of
you, you can still detect when he aims at them. IMHO, always watch
what's going on around you. I believe it's illegal to have a radar
detector in some states !! Good luck.....

I've worked with Cobra and Whistler as microwave Engineer for the past 15
years so here's my take on the subject. Today's detectors are some of the
most sensitive receivers available, they should all give reasonable warning
to the traditional guns and all of them are useless against laser. Without
sounding to self serving, the Cobra RSA-515 (available at any truck-stop)
is one of if not the best on the market. It is undetectable by the
detector/detectors and has (of all of the units I have characterized) the
best sensitivity and the best selectivity (less false-alarms).
Radar detectors are legal for 4-wheelers in all states but Virginia. If
you drive an 18-wheeler then it's against an Interstate Commerce Commission
regulation to use one.
I have found that these things come in most handy around town when you are
less likely to be paying attention to the 15 MPH speed limit and most
likely to get nailed. They all also are starting to introduce "SAFETY"
features which may be beneficial as new transmitters are put into use
around the country.
Drive safely.

It's important for the owner of a radar detector to know how to use
it. The best thing to do is let a "bird dog" (another car) cruise
about 100 yds ahead of you. This way, you'll pick up the extra radar
waves if the cop is using "instant-on" techniques.

By far the best detector is the Valentine One Locator, sold by Valentine
Research of Cincinatti, Ohio. It's more than others, but it's the ONLY
detector that actually works how people want detectors to. Read the Car and
Driver article where it got a 97 out of 100 points whereas second place, a
Bel 8 series (forgot which one) got about 52!

The Valentine one is hands-down the best.

Grrrrrr..... 100 yds is WAY to close. It's obnoxiously close from the
front guy's perpective. You do this to me and I'll put you in front. A
1/4 mile or so is a much better distance. All you need to do is to pick up
a cop zapping him with instant on. The cop will trigger at 1/4 mile or
less, so you could be 1/2 mile back and still pick up the event easily.
Don't turn the guy into the conga leader of a conga dance.

So, if a cop pulls you over, and notices a radar detector in your car, is
he much more likely to give you a ticket? At that point, he knows that
your speeding wasn't an "accident." How do you talk yourself out of a
ticket if you have a radar detector?

You can't. It is impossible. You either have to hope that the cop
doesn't see it, then pull it down and put it in your dash when he is
walking up to your car, or get an in dash unit like a K40 that is
hidden...

SS 700 on sale for $350. Front detection X, K, and KA. Small dash
display, remote front sensor...

UN 700 on sale for $450. Undetectable hidden in dash front detection X,
K, and KA. Just 2 small led's in your dash and a city highway switch
where ever you choose to mount it.

Add laser to the above units for another $100.

Great prices and easy installation.

Woah... THAT'S a good way to get shot... start pulling things down and
hiding them while a cop is walking up to your car. geez... <sigh>

Is it true that you only can buy them directly from the company? I
was hoping to find a lower price as $400 for one w/laser detection is
rather steep...

April 97 Car and Driver rates the Valentine One as twice as good as all
competition. It has twice the range of the competion in X, K, and Ka.
It is also undetectable by the VG-2 Interceptor although the new Uniden
can pick up its local oscilator at 120 feet. If you were in Australia
this might be a problem because they use modified Uniden and Cobra
detectors to detect radar detectors. The people at Valentine added
additional insulation to my detector to eliminate falsing due to noise
from my ignition system. I thought that I may buy the Uniden and test
it against my insulated V1. I will have thirty days to return the
Uniden.

By your logic: superglue in the locks. Can't get fleeced by the
pistol packing tax collectors if you can't start your car.
