I had a major arguement with a Jeep owner (Grand Cherokee-V6 engine) who

always uses SUPER in his Cherokee because he says the gas is "cleaner".
I argued that it is not worth using SUPER since regular gas would give
him the same performance and that SUPER is only for high performance
cars. I beleive that he is a misinformed consumer of gasoline... I
would like some feedback from you guys.

You are correct and your friend is wrong. If you use high octane fuel in a car
that was not designed for it the car will pollute more because it is unable to
burn the fuel correctly.

I think you are both wrong. Most cars run fine on regular gas but
others run better with super. A higher octane gasoline burns more
completely with fewer unburned hydrocarbons and other deposits which
carbon up the engine or exit out the tailpipe. A cleaner burn results
in fewer emissions and a cleaner exhaust and engine. Using a better
gas you can usually notice a slight marginal increase in power upon
acceleration.

You don't have to own a high performance car to use super gas. Any car
designed to burn unleaded fuel will perform better with higher octane
gas.

:Look in the owners manual. Use what it recommends. If it says 93 octane
then he's fine; if it says 87 then he's wasting his money.

It's really that simple :)

BZZZZZT. This is patently false. The computer may not be able to process
the additional octane, resulting in possibly reduced performance.

Sheesh, just RTFM.

Since when the does the computer "process octane"? Do you actually
think the computer does a chemical analysis on the chemical properties
and composition of the incoming fuel? It injects what it gets and
attempts to ignite it regardless of what is incoming. Depending on
what it actually gets will determine if the ignition will work and how
well it works.

The engine computer provides the processing power to control the
delivery, exit of exhauste gases and ignition of the air and fuel into
each cylinder in an efficient manner. It is not some mystical magical
box, it is not as smart as you seem to think.

Lower compression, lower octane. Higher compression, higher octane.
That's what I've been told by Engine Techs. Does this make sence?

I use 92 octane in my car. I get better gas mileage by about 40 miles.
Anything higher - the car burns it faster!

How about gas with alcohol, up to 10% ethanol?
How is this supposed to burn?

This seemed to be the trend so far as I know. The higher compression engine
running
on lower octane would fire too early, or have preignition before tdc. This
had a tendency
to drive the piston the opposite direction, and the engine would ping and run
rough. The
one secret is what is your car best tuned/timed for?

read the owners manual and use the grade suggested in the
