My car battery dead because of opened door last night. I got this
battery charger but I am not sure the connection.

To jump start:

1) I connect battery charger's positive end (red) to battery's positive
end.
2) I connect battery charger's negative end (black) to car's metal
parts.

To charge (?):

1) I connect battery charger's positive end (red) to battery's positive
end.

2) I connect battery charger's negative end (black) to battery's
negative ends.

Is this right? I know the jump start works this way, but not sure about
the battery charging part.

Thanks,
- philip

Always connect negative to negative and positive to positive. or black to
black and red to red.

In owners manuals, the proper way to jump a car is connecting the red
positive to red
positive, and on one auto jumper the black to the frame.
Using a charger is better if the battery is all the way down. This saves the
battery and
the alternator. The alternator wasn't designed to charge a battery from
completely dead.
The battery usually overheats and the plates can buckle due to heat. The
alternator
gets overheated and is damaged or destroyed. Just after a completely drained
battery
from leaving the lights on all day, I got a jump and then charged the
battery. A few days
later the battery went dead. Not long after I had to change the alternator.

Just make sure someone hasn't replaced the battery leads with the wrong
colored replacements - that'll ruin your day. It's a good idea to trace
'em back the first time, just to be safe. :)

That's a great way to cause a spark right at the battery, opening up
the very real possibility of having the battery blow up in your face.

Positive allways goes to the red (+) terminal on the battery, but the
negative cable of the charger/booster cables allways get's connected
somewhere else, such as the frame, or other ground-connected item
under the hood - preferably as far as possible from the battery..
This way, when the inevitable spark occurs, it's nowhere near the
explosive vapours possibly escaping from the battery.

Charging

Before you charge the battery (Disconnect battery cables first ) then attach
the charer cables to the battery .Never charge a battery with battery cables
attached .

Boosting
Attach the cables to the appropriate colour cables except in this order
Attach to battery of car to be boosted red + black -- >>then boosting source
red + black to good ground spot other than the battery.

This is true. There used to be ads showing a battery explosion that threw
battery acid
in all directions. In actual cases the person ends up blind with serious
burns.
