A saturn dealer in the area recently told me that they won't pay more
than $500 on a trade in of ANY salvaged vehicle (regardless of make or
model).

so probably quite a bit.

Well, for *me* as the customer, it would remove the car from
consideration unless I knew its history personally. Too great
a risk that the car is a "Frankenstein" put together from n
differently wrecked cars by a junkyard, perhaps amateurishly
and even dangerously. Even the inept repair of a single totaled
car can be bad news for the next poor slob who owns it.

That's one dealers stated opinion, and what they didn't say is that vehicle
with the salvage title they buy for $500(or less) they will sell to the first
person they can, for as much as they can(or as close to book as possibile).
States differ in names they use to re-issue titles, some have several types,
some have catch-alls such as "salvage".
Any used car purchase is "buyer beware", so know what to look for, and know
what your looking at.
As far as Saturns go, I wouldn't give $500 for one, no mater on what title.
