A saturn dealer in the area recently told me that they won't pay more
than $500 on a trade in of ANY salvaged vehicle (regardless of make or
model).
so probably quite a bit.

That's one dealers stated opinion, and what they didn't say is that vehicle
with the salvage title they buy for $500(or less) they will sell to the first
person they can, for as much as they can(or as close to book as possibile).
States differ in names they use to re-issue titles, some have several types,
some have catch-alls such as "salvage".
Any used car purchase is "buyer beware", so know what to look for, and know
what your looking at.
As far as Saturns go, I wouldn't give $500 for one, no mater on what title.
