I pulled out of my driveway in my five speed Corolla, rounded the
corner and found the car wouldn't shift into third gear. I slowed
down and barely forced it into neutral. Then I heard a loud clunk,
and looked in my rear view mirror. Something had fallen out of the
engine compartment, into the road. I went back and looked...
It was my oil cap. I'd left it off, and it had worked its way down
and through and jammed who knows what before it fell out. I put it
back on, of course.
Car runs fine now.
Moral of the story: Reinstall the dang oil cap, and anything else you
take off before you shut the hood.
