My only big item out of all three was the airconditioner on the 91 740.
But then Volvo doesn't make airconditioners, they are a US aftermarket
add-on. Go figure the only thing that broke was made and installed right
here in the US.

Part of the reason is that the engines are grossly "overbuilt." Most of my
experience has been with the earlier B18/B20/B21 4 cycl engines and I was
told that those engines had more main bearing surface area than most V8s.
My current Volvo is an '82 DL with 230K. I doesn't burn any oil and never
needed any engine work (save the routine stuff). I drive it everyday to work
and regularly take it on long trips (Wash. DC to Atlanta most recently).
They may not be the most trouble-free cars in the world but they seem to be
one of the longest lasting.

The very high nickel content of the alloy they used for the old
engines up to the B23 series. Not sure what will happen to the later
aluminum ones, Volvo states that they designed them with a 10-20%
increase in the life expectancy as part of the requirements. Guess
time will tell. Meanwhile I'll keep my 84 and 87 B21 and B23 with 200k
and 110k miles.
Volvo owners in general tend to do more preventative maintenance then
other carowners which of course would contribute greatly.
Either way buy one, you wont be sorry unless the previous owner didnt care
for it. This is of the utmost importance.

: over builtm, overengineered and low reving.
in the late 60s, the B18/B20 ancestor engine bragged in having *five* main
bearings in it's 4-inline. Add to that the slant mounting of the later
overhead cammed B230 etc probably adds to their longevity...
*but not so* for the deviate B28 and other committee offerings :(
--- stay with the 240 Series!
