I just bought a clean, 1988 240 dl with 120 k miles. Got an older car
totaled recently, so we got a good deal on this used 240 dl that had
obviously been pampered. Heard conflicting things about how long these
things run, and how much to maintain.

I always like the way they looked, and with a family, tell me about your
experience

Too many miles to count. You will sell it before it stops running, no
joke. 250-400K miles is a common maximum lifespan on the engine before
it needs rebuilding. The brakes and electrical systems will fail long
before the engine gives out.

I would safely say that the car is good until it is about 20 years old.

Enjoy! :)

If not proprely cared for they can be a bit concerting to drive.

Change the oil and filter often. Minimum 3000 miles if "normal" oil, 4000 to
5000 if using synthetic. Address engine running and performance problems
immediately. Do not let them linger.

Change the timing belt at recommended intervals. Be anal about this. It can
leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere with only a tow to get you home.

Cost: Service, if done at a Volvo Dealer, will be expensive. They charge high
like other car dealers. Independent mechanics can save $$ IF they know the
intricacies of the Bosch fuel systems.

If your a do it yourselfer, Pick up a Bentley Manual to start with. At a later
time add the specific Volvo Service manuals if the urge or need strikes. Keep
in touch via this newsgroup and other Volvo help sites on the net.

I bought both my Volvos used. Both had problems. The 85 final repair parts
cost was just over $450 and that was 28,000 trouble free miles ago. The car
was dumped because "no one" in the area could get it to run correctly. After
"they" had screwed it up, tracked the culprit down to a missing O-ring that
allowed a vacuum leak which through the air-fuel mix off. Not finding that
simple $1.00 part at the beginning of the problem cost the previuos owner over
$1000 plus dmaged the parts I had to replace as the various mechanics tried to
compensate for the vacuum leak beyond what the control system could handle.

The 83 cost about $80 to repair. A relay for the overdrive was $45, which was
quoted as a transmission repair of over $1200. The other $ was vacuum hoses
and seals for the injectors. Has run like a dream for 34,000 since.

Other than oil changes and tires the 83 needed a new clutch at 180,000, the 85
a new relay for the OD at 108,000, and both have had there timing belts
changed. Cost per year to maintain both vehicles has been under $500 per year
in parts. I do all my own labor. Your costs may vary.

I have a '78 245DL (your model but in station wagon shape with an older
vintage motor B21F rather than B230F engine).

My car is running at 215,000 and I plan to take her over 300,000 as I'm
having it completely repainted this year.

Change the oil at 3K religiously, keep up on required maintenance. You
should have the same kind of luck unless some errant driver totals your
car in another manner.

Old Volvos cannot be insured for what they are really worth.

These cars will run forever. There are many 240s out there that are older
than 20 years. Mine is an '82 and is still a daily commuting car. Compared
to the newer cars, they are easy and cheap to fix. The 240 is your basic
front engine, rear wheel drive "tank" with a rear differential and frame
that will easily handle the torque from a V-8 Mustang engine. This morning,
I noticed at one light alone, there were three rear wheel drive Volvos.

I am not sure if the '88 has airbags or not, but there is the problem with
small adults and children in the front seat of a car with airbags. My Volvo
does not have airbags or ABS - but we always wear seatbelts and the car has
never been in a accident.

I used to own a 1987 240 DL. I finally sold it when it reached 260K miles.
There was nothing wrong with it, I just got the urge to buy a newer car. Being
very pleased with my first Volvo, my next car was another Volvo. I bought a
1990 740 Turbo because it was a little different than what I had been driving
but, most importantly, it was still a Volvo.
After seeing how well my Volvos had served me, my father bought a 1991 240 and
has been very pleased with it.

Volvo's version of a PCV valve. If it blocks, the oil seals
will start to blow. Attached are instructions for replacing them.

One of mine is the same yr. 240 DL as yours. I already have 45k miles more
than yours. I haven't spent a penny on any repair last year. Fluid changes,
throttle-body cleaning etc I do myself. ( $24 on Syn oil, 2.40 on filter;
$12 on a box of Dexron III, $1.20 on ATF Type F, $4 on antifreeze, $ 1 on
distill water and none on brake fluid so far.)
I think the more you know about the car, and the more you can do your own
maintenance, the cheaper it cost you.
If it was a "pampered car", you can expect it to go 200-300k miles w/o major
work.

BTW: I bump into a friend this morning who told me he just needed some work
done on his Lincoln Continental: one Vac. Booster, one caliper, 1 tie-rod
end and wheels alignment. But the shop talked (or scared) him into
re-surfacing all rotors etc. He unhappily showed me the bill.: $1,000 in
parts, $620 on labor totaling $1,800!

Was the conflict on how long these things run an argument between 300,000
miles and 400,000 miles?
These cars, with basic maintenance, can last one helluva long time. They
are nicknamed "Brick" for their durability.

My 86 240GL had 340,000 mi and ran fine (everything worked but a couple of
things leaked) when I sold it for $1500 and bought a 94 940 with 88,000 mi
for $10,500 two years ago. The 940 has 192,000 mi now and my biggest
expense so far is a $210 radiator I put in myself. I love Bricks. Closest
thing yet to a free ride.

Actually in thinking about it, I've never seen one that has died beyond
repair, usually they either get wrecked, or depending on location they
rust to pieces.

My commute car is a '93 with 197K. Picked it up used last
year. Repairs have been resetting the starter inhibit
switch, new battery (original one died) and new timing
belt. My A/C needs to be checked for a leak but other than
that -- Planning on this one lasting another 10 years.

Like all above said Oil Change!!

This is my 5th Volvo. Had a '78 that got rear ended by a
delivery van - My wife drove away, Rear Door of the S/W
sprung, but the Toyota that also got hit was totaled.

I know it isn't *technically* a 240DL, but my old '75 164E(essentially
a 200 series in all but the outer sheetmetal and the extra 2 cylinders)
got about 260-270K before it was sold due to just being too old to
properly keep up(over 20 years)

Bulletproof engines. Last forever.

120k is just warming up. Take good care of her and she'll last to 500k
at least.

When I sold my ´82 Volvo 240, I got over 260K Miles.
So I think that there should be no problem with 120K miles.

I bought my 1982 240DL in 1990 when it had 110k on it. It's now within 500
miles of 250K and I'd drive it across the countty tomorrow. I've taken it into
the dealer for scheduled service every 15,000 miles and changed the oil every
3,000 or so miles. It needs a little attention to rust now which I expect to
deal with this summer. I plan on putting the 300,000 mile emblem on the grill
early in 2004.

is running like a charm. I take it every two years to the same VOLVO
(only volvo) mechanic (not a dealership). He works his magic and
besides break work and oil changes, I do nothing. The car starts the
first time every morning if the weather is 20 below or 100 above.

The only problem I am having at 250 is some electrical issues.

120 is burning in the car....

Its just a about time for you to start having elecrical problems with
the wiring harness and/dist Hall sensor, and maybe mass air meter.
Typically, suspension bushings have gone too. Having said all this,
these 240's are great vehicles and the above problems are well worth
fixing if the body is in good shape.

And Volvo will give you medallions for each 100k miles. got two so far
for my 87 240GL Wagon. Expect to get the one for 300K in a couple more
years. What a "tank"!!

course, my 74 model 144 had 350k+ on it before I gave it to a Volvo collector.
