hello:

is it cheaper to buy a new car through a car buying pogram? or is it
cheaper to buy it directly from the dealer.

does anybody have experience in this? any input is welcome.

thanks

ed

I have tried carpoint and autobytel, and I think they are good, but I do
not think they can provide the lowest price and you have to find the
price yourself. Autobytel give me a 99 Camry LE price @ 19.9K while I
can find @19.4K from local dealer.

Anyway you can try this service for free, and you can get some idea from
it.

Get a quota first, then bargain with dealers. Autobytel gave me $700 over 98
accord ex invoice two months ago, finally I bought 99 model just %500 above
invoice.

Hope it helps.

Ed,

Swing by http://www.newbuyer.com/purchaseprocess.htm for in-depth information
on buying through dealers vs. buying programs.

Hope this helps,

Another data point:

carpoint quoted me $200 over invoice for Camry LE with ABS/deluxe stereo/
power driver seat value package, sunroof.

The higher end models (XLE, 6cylLE, 6cylXLE) would have been considerably more
over invoice ($750 to $1200 I believe), because these are produced in far
fewer numbers.

Total cost: $19764 (from memory; maybe off by $10 or so). All included except
"documentation fee".

I will be picking it up by the end of the week.

Just be careful with Autobytel. I am still getting calls from them three
months after I bought my truck plus the local newspaper ran a story here about
how they sell your name to other junk mailers. Great. More spam Just what we
all need.

Just don't assume Autobytel is a good deal. Autobytel guarantees an easy
purchase experience. They DON'T guarantee the lowest price. They quoted me a
price more than $700 higher than an auction service I used.

I recommend autoweb.com. They put a dealer in touch with me for my new
Solara. The dealer asked 3% (per agreement with autoweb) over invoice,
about $750 for this hard to come-by new car. I was happy to pay it.

Also, don't buy a dealers invoice report from Consumers Report or any sight.
You can find them free on some some auto web site
