I just helped a friend change the oil in his 2003 Toyota 4Runner
equipped with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 engine and we took pictures of the
process. It should be the same procedure for all 2003 to 2009 4Runner
vehicles with the 4 liter.

The manual and oil filler cap recommend using 5W-30 but he's been
using Mobil 1 10W-30 since he bought the truck to better match the
tropical South Florida climate.

Here's my guide page - http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/Toyota-4Runner-SUV-1GR-FE-V6-Engine-Oil-Change-Guide

I hope someone finds it to be useful.

Cheers,

I would suggest that from the perspective of the climate in Florida, 5w30
and 10w30 are the same thing, except that the 10w oil is thicker while the
engine is still cold. Once the motor comes to temp, the 30-part of the oil
takes control of the characteristics.

I'd suggest that 5W30 will work just as well and give him better fuel
economy.

Will the fuel economy be WAY better? Probably not. But over the course or a
year, he'll likely save a tank or two of gasoline, which works out to what,
600 miles, or so.

If one wanted to adjust for the South Florida climate, then a move to 10w40
would be the thing to do. Having said that, they (Toyota) give a chart that
shows how the oil protects to any given temperature range. I really suggest
one follows that chart, no matter what I have said.
