My thoughts are - undo the motor mounts and drop the front diff.
anyone ever had fun with this project? Any tips?

My first question would be. Why are you changing the pan? Is it
damaged or do you have a stripped oil drain plug hole? If your pan
has been off before and reinstalled with RTV instead of a pan gasket
as many are.... It will need to be cut all the way around with a
razor knife in order to remove it. This will be a difficult job to do
with the motor still in the vehicle. If the pan has a gasket, it will
be much easier. Keep in mind that the pan will need to be dropped
significantly in order to clear the oil pump pickup tube, I haven't
heard of this being accomplished with the motor still inside the
vehicle on a 4 x 4. The ones I have done have always been when I've
pulled the motor out.

I have had the truck for 13 years and never touched the oil pan. So I might
assume that there is a gasket. I am even having a difficult time finding an
oil pan.....

The oil pan on a 89-95 3.0 V-6 is steel. I would wire brush the
thing down really well, put a good rust inhibitor on it, and then
paint it with a high quality paint. If it is the front that is rusty
due to rock chips, etc. You could possibly also apply some
undercoating spray to the front panel that sees rocks and other road
debris during normal driving. This would at least buy you time while
you locate a replacement pan. The pan isn't under any kind of
pressure so even if it did start to leak it wouldn't be a disaster
unless it were on the bottom and you didn't pay attention to the
ground under your vehicle when you pull out of a parking spot.
