When should the first oil change be on a brand new Toyota Tacoma V6? And is
it recommended to run Mobil 1 synthetic oil change right from the start?
Lastly, if synthetic is recommended, what oil filter should I be using to
last the extra miles between changes(7500-10,000)?
Thanks for any help.
better synthetic than Mobile 1. their top grade will last up to a year with
their filter. Using their 6 months oil, they seem to lean toward the AC
Delco.
their web site will give you LOTS more info.

filter - $5.00 US.
Oil - 6qt.US @ $1.50/qt.
Total $14.00 US plus labor.
Do it every 5000 miles and the cost over 100,000 miles is $280.00 US.
I do mine every 3,000 miles and the cost over 100,000 miles is $500.
--------------------------vs.-------------------------------------
One engine rebuild $8,000
------------------------------------------------------------------
DO THE MATH!!!!
Personally, I change the oil at 500 miles to eliminate break-in oil. The
engine really isn't broken in at this interval but NO CASTING PROCESS
ELIMINATES 100% of all casting sand. This allows sufficient time for the
pistons to seat and gets the silica out of the engine......
Then I change oil every 3,000 miles. This eliminates the blow-by impurities
that gel oil and foul engines. It also allows the oil to clean the engine
(detergent additives). These additives break down and start becoming
saturated with grime from about 5,000 miles depending on conditions.
I use Regular oil (not synthetic).
Key point.....once you start changing oil, stick with one brand of motor oil
(Pennzoil, Quaker St, Valvoline, Havoline, etc.) it really doesn't seem to
matter what you use as long as you always use the same brand. Try to stick
with the same weight as well. Engines like this consistency.....
Toyota Recommends oil changes every 7,500 miles or 3 months whatever comes
first.

Your dealer can't answer this? You can't read your owner's manual?

My dealer said to wait until 15,000 before changing to synthetic oil.
His reason: synthetic oil lubricates TOO well, and will prevent the
engine components from wearing in properly.

Lots of folks don't change their oil until the 5000 mile recommendation in
their manual, and they do OK. How long do you plan on owning this truck?
If you're only going to own it a few years, don't waste the money on
synthetic oil. If you plan on keeping your truck for several hundred of
thousands of miles, and will do extended drain interval, do consider
synthetics.
You can use synthetic oil any time. The old thought about synthetic oil
hindering break in isn't as valid as it used to be years ago...engines are
made better.
Amsoil is good oil, but I don't think that it's worth the money. Some folks
do get the 25,000 or 35,000 miles within a year that Amsoil claims, and
others with different engines and different driving conditions need to
change their oil more often as determined by oil analysis.
If you plan on regular 3000 to 5000 mile oil changes, I'd use Castrol GTX
10W-30 and Purolator Pure One, Toyota, or Bosch Premium oil filters. If
you're in a cold winter climate, use 5W-30 in the winter. Chevron,
Pennzoil, and Mobil oils are also good.
If you do use synthetic, Mobil 1 is the best for the money, again 10W-30,
and the full drain interval shown in your owner's manual. It is good for
longer, but I'd only do it with analysis.
If you're working that engine hard in hot summers, I'd use 15W-40 with an
API-SL rating. Toyotas are hard on oil, probably due to the oil shearing
between the teeth of the camshaft drive gears. I know, your owner's manual
doesn't specify 15W-40, but if you bought this same engine in Australia, or
South America, or Afghanistan, or elsewhere, they'd probably call for
20W-50. The auto makers in the U. S. push light oils to cut their C.A.F.E.
penalty payments.
The best oils for the money I've found are made by Schaeffer
http://www.schaefferoil.com/ They give results equal to Mobil 1 and Amsoil
and cost less. Look at the Technical Data for their #703 10W-30, #204S ATF,
#267 gear oil, and other products. You can check the District Offices link
and see if there's a rep near you that sells retail.
