I had a friend of mine and she suggested that the V6 engine sludge can cause
a build up of burnt oils and in the oil pump could cause it to fail at
50,000 to 80,000k and you will have to rebuild the motor. She said the 1970
to 1980 ford 351-400 mods BB had this problem there was no way to fix it so
they redone a new style heads for correction. As a result, Ford had to drill
the block to open the passings up so oils would move faster . This caused
the motors to get a bad name and never sold again so they stoped maken them
in 81.

Is this what will happen to the Toyota V6?

Not to worry! If you have a sludge problem with either of the
two Toyota engines, you can now call (888) 802-9436 and make
arrangements for a dealer near you to repair them under
warranty. It has been extended to eight years, unlimited
mileage. The number for Lexus is, (888) 654-5421. The improved
V6 should be on the market by August.

Hey, I had a 1970 351 Cleveland. That engine was great - too bad electrical
system smoked and the aerodynamics were so bad the front end would float at 75
mph.

It may be more of a matter of cleaning than repairing. Unless Toyota is
replacing baffles and whatever else might come up later.

Well, I don't think people are going to stop worrying about their
engines sludging up. TCL's message is exactly the point.

While Toyota can clean the engine of the sludge but the life of the
engine may very well be shortened because of the side effects. How well
this gets covered under the policy, we'll find out when we hear more.

If that were the case, then this thing wouldn't blow up as big as it
did. You think Honda owners changed oil any more irregularly than Toyota
owners?

According to:
http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=1925

"But there are about 100 entries in the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration's Consumer Complaints database from Toyota and Lexus
owners who say they they were not reimbursed. Many complainants say they
could prove with receipts that
they followed proper maintenance procedures, but were told the sludge
problem was caused by abuse and wouldn't be covered."

I'd be interested to see how this whole thing turns out. But Toyota may
very well be making secret settlements with those owners, so we may
never know.
