I'm planning to replace my old '88 Camry with a 2000. But I'm having
trouble deciding between the CE and LE.

I had originally settled on the LE, because I thought I'd save over
getting all the options I wanted on a CE. Then I found that almost
all of the CEs come with the CL & HU packages, which have just about
all I want anyway. And the LEs all come with VP, which the only thing I
care about is the ABS (and I'm undecided on that).

Near as I can tell, this is the difference between a CE & LE, the way
they're configured on the lots around here:

Better upholstery
15" tires
Driver's seat height adjuster
2 more speakers
Power driver's seat
Remote keyless entry
ABS

The price difference is $1600 list. Even taking off $600 for the
package that has the ABS (even though I can't buy it that way), that's
still $1000. And none of these strike me as particularly important
items.

On top of that, they have a special right now where the CEs are
selling below invoice (I didn't get a price on the LE yet).

Am I missing something? The extra speakers, power driver's seat, and
remote keyless entry strike me as unnecessary luxuries (I may be
interested in the height adjuster because my wife is quite a bit
shorter than me). The bigger wheels and ABS I'm undecided on. My
only desire for ABS is that I figure it'll be standard when I replace
our minivan, and I'd like to have it or not have it on both cars.

Any opinions?

Sounds like you answered your own question. You want the CE. I guess its
all individual preference. I would go with the LE... Those things are
high on my want list.

Being a Toyota Sales Professional,my advice to you is this:If price is your
number one purchase motivator, and the CE is the car for you if you are the
type of person who is a long term owner. However,if you plan to trade in 3 or
4 years, the resale or trade value percentage is definately in favor of the
more well equippped LE model.a factor that could end up costing you the same
1600 dollars you would be initially saving.

I guess what I want is the best value. I don't mind paying for some
options if I think I'm getting my money's worth.

That's pretty much the problem. "My money's worth" will be different
for everyone. I couldn't care less about remote keyless entry - to me
it's just another thing I have to hang on my keychain. Someone else
might think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

To address something someone else brought up: I tend to keep my cars
at least 10 years, so resale value probably isn't going to be that
important. I think it's going to come down to how much I think I want
ABS.

Thanks for letting me think out loud :-).
