Hi,
The EA81 engine in my Brumby UTE is slowly dying, 230 000 K's and
still going is not bad. It would have been nice to at least get an
overhead cam, fuel injected engine (EA82), however, the chassis rails
are too narrow to fit one. Looks like there might be an EA81 (not
O'head camm) that is fuel injected, but that would be the best that
would work.

Has anyone had experiences in Subaru engine changes that could
suggest better options.

Thanks,

Phil

PS: They do not make ute's anymore and I want to keep mine, it's a
trojan for getting to work and being a handy trailer.

Look here:

No details yet unfortunately. I have emailed them about it. See what turns
up.

Got me a '92 Brumby here with 85,000K on the clock. The thought has also
crossed my mind about a bigger donk and a 5 speed trans......

Id stick with the ea-81..The hp difference is only 4 or 5hp, and no worries
about timing belts, cam seals, noisy lifters and as many oil
leaks...230000k isnt that many..there usually good for 250k miles, like
475000 k's...You can get a turbo ea81 to put in it, they sold them like
that in 85-87 or something...but the turbo motors do have more troubles..Or
put the fuel injection system off a turbo motor onto a non-turbo motor..

Glenn,
Impressive racing link, I have had no joy connecting to the Newsgroup link
at Pigpond. A '92 Brumby with only 85,000K's must be the best one around,
it's not a Jap wreck engine change?. I would be in the market to buy your
change out engine if you go ahead with an upgrade.

The 5sp trans is a must with any change, rumor has it that the Leone tail
shaft fits perfectly, rather than cutting and welding.

Bob,
Your right Bob, there is the hassle factor in making design changes to a
car that was not originally built for it. I did like the thought of a fuel
injection as the carby does lack. I guess it comes down to either; 1) rebuild
my existing engine or 2) buy a Jap wreck engine with low K's.

Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the Jap wreck engines?

The Upgrade to the 5sp Trans is a must, the Brumby seems to scream over
100Kph.

Thanks for your thoughts Bob.

Phil
Subaru did release a EA81 Turbo which is fuel injected and turboed and
will fit straight in...
Now the availability of these in OZ may be scarce try engine importer
and make sure U get a front cut as that will include Gearbox and full
wiring loom as well as ECU which will make the upgrade a whole lot
easier....

DJ,
The turbo/FI seems to be the best ECU upgrade that fits, I will keep an eye out,
do you reckon there would be many in good health? will give it a whirl anyway.
Tidy webpage, did the cop car have the number plate "XR8 ***", not much forward
planning with police plates and I've never seen a Leone look so good.

You wouldn't happen to be with the Aviation industry by chance?

Catch ya,

Have a look, and see if the Wolf 2D or 3D computers will drive a subie
engine also... They're a VERY straight forward module, and work very well...
