I saw a thread a while back re: diagnostic mode on a '90 Subaru Legacy where
you had to connect two black test connectors on the ECU to see the check
engine flash code. I have an '88 Subaru GL but cannot find these two black
connectors. Do they exist on '88 GLs? Is there something else I should be
looking for?

Thanks,

Joel

When my light came on my '86gl all i did was replaced the vapor can. under the
hood by the grill and that was all it needed.

you shouldnt need to connect the black connectors, the car should
already be in test mode
just turn on the ignition and watch the blinking light

if you dont have a code book, email me or post the code here and ill
tell you what it means

It's not blinking... the check engine light stays on solid. Is there some
where else to look for a blining LED? I looked around the ECU but could not
find one.

Thanks,

Joel

What symptom clued you to do this? I already inspected it as best possible
(the purge control valve is built into it, so all I am able to do is a
visual on it) and all of the lines seemed to be in good shape.

Thanks,

Joel

pull off the lower dashboard cover (the one by your knees when in the
driver seat
there will be a black box behind it, and on the box will be a small led
turn on the ignition and the led will blink the codes

long blinks are for the first number, short ones for the second number.

if the led doesnt blink, you will have to connect the test mode
connector, and disconnect the read memory connector to read the codes.

Thanks for your help. It looks like it's flashing 24. What does that mean?

I have a Subaru manual marked 1983 with dealer addition marking 1988 My
Subaru service agency told me that the manual was the same thru 1988. I
think I made a mistake and believed him. Later on I found a lot of other
reason to never believe the crook.

My manual shows code 34 to be " auto choke power remains off" . This seems
to be different from yours .

I have been getting a 24 code which according to my manual means " Vacuum
switch 11 remains off" I checked out the vacuum switch and it is not
faulty. Do you have another definition for code 24.

Would it be possible for you to post a full listing of the codes.
Following is the full list from my book

Yeah. I've already checked the EGR valve itself - it's working fine. The
solenoid is showing about 33 ohms (within spec), but must not be changing
during operation.
