I have a MY94 with no mods, an I was wondering why I get very bad fuel
economy out of it.
last tank full only did 16L /100km so i'm starting to think there could be
something wrong with the car.
It has had its 100,000km service which included changing air filter, spark
plugs etc. and I have also put some fuel injector cleaner through it.

Strange thing is that when I drive it hard I still get 12.5L/100?

What pisses me off is that Subaru say these cars should do about 8km/100
around town. there is no way that would happen with my car even when driving
economically.

Apart from that the car runs perfectly and doesn't blow smoke or have
problems starting.

Any one got any ideas?

How heavy is your foot?

I use to own a 94 WRX with a type RA engine in it. Before my modifications
(exhaust and airfilter), I could only get about 280km on a whole tank.
After the modifications, I could get to about 320km on a tank around town.
Out of town driving would give me 380km on a whole tank. A friend of mine
claimed he could get 400km on half a tank of fuel and not using "boost".

What is restricting the car is the standard exhaust system. You need to get
rid of the front pipe, as it has a huge cat converter and a plate that
covers the waste gate pipe. Also get rid of the cat converter in the
middle. I suggest you replace the whole exhaust system and install a
performance air filter (or cold air induction box). It should provide more
power and increase your fuel economy.

Again it depends on how heavy-footed you are on the accelerator.

My friend with a 98 Turbo gets 18L/100KM usually, so 16 is not bad. He tends
to use the power quite often once the car is warmed up, but doesn't go all
the way all the time. Again, as stated before by WRXman, it depends on your
right foot ;-)

If you are going to buy car with high-pressure turbocharger be ready to
spend lots of money on fuel. I have 91 Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD
(left-steering GT-4). Even with Greddy booster turned off it consumes from
15 to 22 L/100 km (depends on my driving manner). So I think 16L/100 km -
it's not bad. I arrived in Canada 1 year ago from Ukraine and was very
disappointed when I realized that Impreza-turbo does not sell here. I had
pleasure to take a test drive on European Impreza-Turbo 2.0 GT (212 HP).
Great car. But have somebody tested new Impreza WRX? How impression? I saw
it on Toronto auto-show and I noticed that it has very soft suspension and
slight brakes. I know that it goes in Europe with 4-pistons front and
2-pistons rear brakes.

Hi Glenn,

I have a MY00 and I get around 10L/100km combined cycle. Couple of weeks
back I drove down to Portland (Vic) and then back along the Ocean Road from
Port Campbell. Going down I was sitting behind a Merc who was doing
anything up to 160. Coming back I was spirited without being stupid [wife
in the car ;-)]. Averaged 8L/100km for the 4 days.

Performance mods are:

4" down pipe with ported turbo flange and 3" high-flow cat
3" system therafter with high-flow muffler
K&N rampod style intake

I would be concerned if I was getting fuel economy like yours. Have you
considered getting the injector's professionally cleaned?

ps. I always use premium.

Nick

My MY99 usually uses 14L/ 100km around town(around 400km per tank)
I drove from Adelaide to Melboune(700km?) on one tank once at a steady 100kph.
I also used a whole tank driving flat(220kph+) out from Kulgera to Alice Springs
(240km)

To improve your fuel consumption, don't bring the engine on max boost, ie keep
under 3000rpm. But where is the fun in that?
