A few days ago I noticed tiny red specks in the gray part of my '95 Outback,
so I can only assume the paint is falling off. There's no rust, but I am a
bit concerned there will be if this keeps up. I've read a few posts here
about Subaru's having thin paint, but just the same I want to know if
there's any way I can slow this process down. Repainting it is out of the
question - I have like $100 in the bank. (poor college student)

Thanks,
Matt

Could be primer but that is usually gray. Modern painting process is to use
galvanized steel, phosphatized coating, e coat (epoxy) baked on with I
believe zinc (this is primer), color coat and clear coat. All of these
(primer), color coat and clear coat usually less than 2 mils each. I
suspect specks are some foreign body. Today's cars do not readily rust
although occasionally an interior surface not galvanized get bubbles during
dipping processes and is uncoated. Then if water and salt get there you get
rust from inside out. Also reminds me friend at chemical co. we worked at
got new, free paint job when something was specking his new car from parking
next to plant.

I think I should have mention that I have a Red Outback. :) The specks are
underneath the doors on the gray area at the very bottom of the vehicle.

I probably should wash my vehicle more. I take it off-road a lot to see my
best friend and it gets quite dirty. However there's nothing like parking a
mud-covered Subaru next to some American 4x4 geek and watching him stare in
amazement that a Subaru sees more trails than his Jeep. :)
