just been searching through the google groups. this question has been asked
before but wasn't really answered I felt...
I'm looking at buying a 89 - 92 Subaru Legacy. either an RS or a GT with
around 60 000 - 100 000kms either wine, black or silver in colour, cloth
int, no sun roof, radio/stereo not important, pref ABS, pref service
history, generally well looked after.
what I am interested in finding out is what the differences are between the
GT and the RS
I understand that the RS's are all 5 speed manual and most of the GT's are 4
speed Auto
The RS's had water/air intercooling, what does the GT have in the way of
intercooling?
I have talked to a few people with experience in owning/driving Legacy's
about the pro's and cons's of 5 speed vs auto in the Turbo Legacy's. It was
pointed out that the manual's can be a bit tricky to drive around town and
tend to 'bog down' or race off like a rocket. But like any car I figured, it
can be put down to getting to know the car and learning how to drive it
best...
I am not really biased toward either manual or auto in a big way, I find I
enjoy driving both. The only thing that holds me back about Autos is their
reliability in the long run. How strong are the Legacy autos? how do they
stand up after traveling high kms? having owned auto's in the past I
understand the extra maintenance required. (i.e. having it serviced
regularly)
I guess the information I am after is in semi technical terms, what do you
miss out on from the RS if you go for a GT and if you go for the RS what do
you gain / lose over the GT? in terms of performance, handling, driveability
(every day car or for long trips or a bit of both), specifications etc. I
cant seem to find a decent comparison anywhere that explains the
differences.
Thanks for your time...

yup all of the above is available in either GT or RS(wot about a nice
dark blue)

it depends really as to which body style we are talking about...
GT stands for GRAND TOURING
RS stands for RALLY SPORT
now all wagons are GT's whether they come with the 4 speed auto or the
rarer 5 speed manual...
the Sedans come in either RS or GT
RS are 5 speed manuals, have a bigger turbo and more power
GT are all built in the factory with Autos( I say factory built as
alot os these have been changed in NZ as a conversion to a 5 speed
manual is cheaper than a rebuild of the Auto) have a smaller turbo and
less power, but saying that the autos 0-100 KM/H times are faster than
a 5 speed as u dont lose boost with gear changes....

Both have exactly the same intercooling, water to air in these earlier
models, more efficient than the WRX or twin turbo air to air setup, but
heavier and more expensive.....

more than likely it will be wot u are use to
I can toodle around town with the best of them
clutch can be tricky at times.....

The Autos have had there problem and are at best unreliable, but their
lives can be extended by the use of an external filter and xtra
cooling...

the trim levels in the RS are usually of a lower spec than the GT's
but it is mainly in the stereo(which u have indicated doesn't matter)
and the material used to trim the seats and door panels...
Now a GT 'wagon with 5 speed gets the best of both worlds(which is wot
I drive)

remove spamsux's to email me
guess I'll just have to try a few out and see..
gonna spend a few days in auckland after a trip christchurch next month and
have a look around a number of dealers and see if i cant drive one home :)
up untill now I have always been to broke to have a nice car. have owned mid
80's Sigma's and Galants, (they were actually quite nice cars for their
time) currently have a 87 Telstar with 302 000 kms on it.. which I'll
probably keep for every day use, such as going to work and stuffing around..
found it
to be a really good car thats easy and cheap to fix. but its not so great
for those long trips and when you need that style and speed factor to show
off :) thou knowing me I'll just drive the Legacy everyday
I did a bit of research and found the Subaru Legacy matches exactly what i
want in a car, somthing that looks and sounds cool, somthing a little
different, somthing that the girlfriend likes :), goes fast and sticks to
the road... Legacy matches all that perfectly.. just a matter of finding the
right one... harder than you think..
thanks for the comments :)

I only ever seen one other that colour here in NZ a few months back but
didnt have enough cash to buy it at the time..
your cars in auz seem to cost quite a bit more... cars like there here go
for between NZ$9995 to NZ$12999. even cheaper if you buy privately... as low
as NZ$6500 I seen reasionable ones go for.. good ones 89 - 92 are just
starting to become hard to find I have noticed. now is probably the best
time to buy one.
catcha.......
