All,

I'm getting closer to buying a WRX wagon and I'm working through some stereo
options with the help of people on this board (special thanks to Alan P.)
My final issue concerns the use of a space-saving sub. If possible, I'd
like to use an under-seat sub and I tested the Subaru sub at the dealer
today (not too bad but want to make sure I investigate all options).

Is anyone on the board using any of the following aftermarket under-seat
subs on an Impreza or WRX?

1) Clarion SRV303 (or PSW 160) -- This happens to look suspiciously like the
Subaru premium package sub (I hear Panasonic makes the Sube sub but couldn't
find it on their site -- might it be a Clarion?) but it'll fit under a seat
no problem. I also saw posts about an older Clarion unit (the PSW160) but I
haven't found any info on the web about this product as it appears to be
discontinued.

2) Kenwood wOOx / KSC-WA62RC -- I read good reviews of this unit, but at
just over 5" thick, I'm not sure it'll go under a seat. I'm also concerned
about the effectiveness of a 5" woofer, but with the passive radiator, who
knows... Anyone using this thing under a seat or elsewhere? Which leads me
to...

3) Infinity Basslink -- This obviously won't fit under the seat, but it
could mount nicely on one of the sides inside the back hatch. Anyone using
one of these bad boys?

Other Questions:

4) For under seat subs, what does it feel like when sitting in the seat with
the sub? If I added an aftermarket, I don't know if I'd stick it under the
driver or passenger seat.

5) How big is the speaker on the Subaru sub? I forgot to look under the
seat (duh).

Thanks in advance for any advice / info.

Just a comment - all the Subaru stock radios until this year were Clarions. So
I suspect you are correct that the Subaru OEM sub is likely the Clarion.

The OEM sub has a 6" (maybe 6.5") driver.

I've got the Clarion PSW-160 installed under the driver's seat in a 96
Legacy Outback. I have been pleasantly surprised at its effectiveness. I
found that a low crossover setting (I use an external crossover) and keeping
the gain setting reasonably low makes a big difference in blending well with
the other speakers. It does add a solid "bottom" to counteract road noise
at speed. It obviously won't rival the rattle-inducing megawatt rap-mobile
in the next lane at the traffic light, but it does leave your brain intact
for everyday use. Regarding how it feels under the driver's seat, that
obviously depends on your choice of music and volume setting, but I've never
had it feel bad!

I talked to some people about the sub and they weren't all that impressed with it. My
old (2000) Nissan truck came with a 'sub' It's similar in design to the Subaru 'sub'.
I took it apart once and was very dissappointed to find out that it was nothing more
then a common Panasonic boombox speaker crossed over with a cheap amplifier to only
produce low notes, which it could not do without extending itself and creating a nast
buzzing noise. If the Subaru unit is a 6" woofer then it's got to have a pretty
shallow basket as the amplifier is also housed in the plastic shell. Just not a good
setup for someone who wants quality sound.

If you want the low notes I would go with a real subwoofer and buy maybe a Bazooka
tube and put it in the trunk. Or a single 8" woofer in ported box. The underseat unit
isn't going to do justice. While you're at it upgrade the speakers to quality
aftermarket units also.

,I have one of these in my SE-R and it rocks. Clear,
powerful and easy to install.

I purchased it from http://www.thezeb.com/ and recommend
them.

I had a 5" aftermarket panasonic Eab12140 model under seat amplified speaker under my seat and it definitely added good bass sound. If you're looking for a high quality bass this one wouldn't do it for you but if you are looking to complement your sound its a good cheap option. It didn't bother the passenger with a rattle or anything.
