Ok, I know most of you think I only drink BEER and make jokes about the
color yellow but I really do have a job. It's President and C.E.O of
Graphic Workshop an Exhibit and Tradeshow company. Most of you will now
either tune out or already skipped this B.S. already, but we do have a
network here and I was interested in finding out more about what others do
for a living. So those that have not tuned out yet here is what I or (we)
do at Graphic Workshop.
This is just one of many projects that we have done just lately but it gives
you a starting idea of what we do and what we can do in a very short time.
This design was started as a concept for Fizogen and went to completion in
less then 30 days including shipping and installing the project at a
tradeshow in the Miami area over last weekend. Besides doing this project
we had many other projects including projects from our wholesale customers
going on at the same time. We are a full service display company that excel
on the graphic end of the project but can handle the construction, show
management as well as the shipping and the setup of the display.
Enjoy. . . . Now, What do you do for a living or for fun?

After all, Rick did ask "What do you do for a living or for fun? "
I'm a computer programmer for the State of Texas Comptroller's Office
(it's a living) and I vaguely remember doing burn-outs in the parking
lot of the Holiday Inn in Tulsa with Dave and Mike Gaither about two
years ago!
Damn, has it been that long since I had any FUN?
Now, I Rebuild/Restore Studebakers Full-time. That is sort-of a
mis-nomer, because I have only actually "Restored" one Studebaker. That
was my wife's '61 Hawk way back in 1994. I was just rebuilding it as a
"driver".. up until 1994. The restoration shop I worked for was closing
it's doors. I bought most of the equipment, and leased the rear half of
their building. 80% of the business through the doors from '92-94 was
business I brought in anyway.
I thought if I was going to make a go of it... I had to prove I could
build a first-place (Nationals) car. Alot of the car was already
completed by then (and some rather poorly- as it wasn't meant to be a
show-car).. But I was able to pull out a First Place at the 1994
Nationals in Bloomington Mn.
Since then, I have built (7) cars that have placed First at the
Nationals (9) times. I should have (11) but we won't get into GT Hawk
judging again... <G>. I will say that NONE of the last 7 cars were
(originally) intended to be "Show Cars"... A friend's '64 Avanti wasn't
supposed to be a "show-car" until I finished the body and paintwork in
1994.. then he decided to show it. It lost (0) Points for paint/body-
scoring 394/400. In both 1994 and 1995.
I have built cars for SDC members from Michigan to Oklahoma. Tennesee,
Indiana, South Carolina... and many locals.
You see pictures of my work here and on the technical pages of NCSDC.com
My current shop is rather "primitive". It's not a state-of-the-art
restoration facility like you see on Monster Garage and Boyd
Coddington's show. But, It's HUGE and CHEAP! I work by myself,. The most
help I ever get is from the owners of some of the cars I've done. A few
have spent weekends, or weeks- at my home... while we work on their car
together. My customers become my Stude-friends.

I am a wellsite geologist in the oilfield. I subcontract to a
consulting firm that rents me out to the oil companies that own or
manage the wells being drilled (i.e, operators). The operator's play
geologist, the person responsible for having planned the well, will
have generated a "prognosis" which is table of geologic formations
that the well is expected to penetrate, and the depths at which they
are expected to be found. My job is to actually be on site as the well
is drilled, and I get a sample of the drill cuttings taken every 5
meters (typically). I wash and screen them, and examine the cuttings
under a 20X binocular microscope. Some formation changes are dead
obvious, others are very subtle or uncertain. I make a daily written
and verbal report to the play geologist to let him (or her) know if
their tops are coming in high, low, or right on.
When we reach a target zone (there may be more than one), I do a
careful examination of the cuttings to determine as best I can the
quality of the rock as a reservoir for oil or gas, and note if either
are present. Oil can be seen directly, and it fluoresces brightly when
exposed to UV light in a light box. We typically run a "hot-wire" gas
detector, which will respond to any trace of gas that gets entrained
in the drilling fluid when a gas zone is penetrated.
Once the well is drilled to its total depth, they bring out out
wireline loggers to run electrical, sonic, and radioactive logging
tools in the well, and one of my duties is to QC the logging
operation, and act as an information conduit between the operator's
technical staff and the logging crew on-site. If the well logs look
favourable, I get to trot over to the drilling foreman and tell him,
"It looks like we got a keeper. You can get pipe on the road."
No two wells are exactly the same; but once I've worked an area for a
while, it becomes easier, as the formation sequence becomes more
familiar.
Nice thing about this job is that it is essentially done when I leave
the location, and my time is my own until the next one comes along.
Biggest downside is being away from home a lot during the busy season,
and being on fast holes where you never get enough sleep.
It looks like I can look forward to having satellite Internet access
at most of my wells in the near future. That will be cool.

Right now I'm desigining fire alarm systems for large commercial

I've worked at many things. Early on included painting (house and cars), body
work, gas station operator and garage mechanic. After a couple of college
degrees, my main employment was as an engineer (mostly process and
development)at IBM. This spanned ferrite memory cores to multilevel
semiconductor chips over a period of 26 years. I left while too young and not
enough years to receive retirement. I've since worked at many other things
including; limousine chauffeur, newspaper critic, substitute teacher, hotel van
driver, new and used car sales. Many of these were overlapping like sub'ing in
the day and driving limo's at night. I've also done non-paying volunteer work
for a few organizations. I think that I am now retired. I guess that I am not

I'm a profession truck driver (not to be confused with the steering holders
and cowboys truckers the media seems to love). I have been driving for 16
years mostly hauling petroluem products, but I decided I had too much money
and not enough sense and I bought my own truck. I wish I had done it years ago.
Before that I built silos, gave Uncle Sam 6 years, and went to Iowa State.

I work for my local friendly power company(at least that is what it was when
I started with them almost 32 years ago). Before that I worked in another
local company by the name of Cannon Mills. Also did some bridge construction
and body shop work. Lets see that should make me about 103 years old. Worked
on first Studebaker when I was only 12 years old. I helped rebuild the
engine on a 48 m-series pick-up and later that summer I helped paint the
same truck. We used (2) 4" California custom brushes. Swell looking truck
from 50 feet at 50 mph. I now use just regular 4" brushes.

Now, seriously, I sell plumbing and HVAC products for the time being. After
25 years at it, I'm back in night school getting my AutoCAD ticket. Hoping
to change jobs soon when I'm done.

No, I have NO idea how I got into this.
Was Director of operations for Canada Place but things took an interesting
turn :)
Prior to that we lived just outside of Seattle for almost six years working
in the commercial construction field (building automation again). To this day
wonder why I ever left..
Also enjoy woodworking (see sig) and boating in the sheltered waters that
are the inlets and fjords around Vancouver BC. I've had the same Stude ('65
Daytona) since towing it from the interior of the province in 1987 and am
still waiting for the right time to get her into the shape she deserves.
