Anyhow, I need to buy tires for my 1950 Champion. All frame,
suspension, steering, brakes, fenders, et cetera, are all stock, no
funky modifications to take into account. The original specified tire
size is 6.40 x 15. I drove this car around for a few months ten years
ago with bias-ply tires and danged near drove myself nuts, and have
decided that I want to go with a radial tire. As best I can figure
it, the closest substitution size is 205/75R15, but I'm not even quite
sure about that. Any recommendations as to the best size to use?
a 6.40 x 15 (pre 1964 sizing) crosses to a 175/75R 15
A 205 75R 15 would probably be too wide for the skinny wheels on a '50
Champion and probably give other fitment problems as well.

The 205s are way too big for the rims and for the car.
Kurt, if you can find some 185-80 R15 radial ply tires, I'm sure you
will be delighted with the results. I'm pretty sure you can get them
in wide whitewall from Coker, but your local tire shop can get them,
as they are standard-issue size for older Volvos and VW beetles.
Don't let them talk you into a 70-series tire.
