I'm about to put more money in the Parkview wagon than I'll ever get
out of it. It's just such a nice car I let my body shop guy talk me into
giving it a decent two tone paint job. Sometimes you just do stupid
things for the right car. So much for my "running the numbers" before
working on a car. I never thought I get hooked on a non-flashy
car but it goes down the road sooo nice.

My money says you will do fine on it, John. Not only because of that famous
horse shoe, but because it will be a nice enough car that the right person
will be willing to pay what it is really worth. It may take a while to find
that guy, but with International exposure, he's out there. I appreciate
your courage, and commentment to a, "plain Jane," and am willing to bet you
are doing the right thing.

This car really talked to me and reminded me of what my GT Hawk was like
when I bought it brand new. It's hard to duplicate the feel of a low mileage
Studebaker since nothing is worn out yet. As to the resale value I feel the same
way about this car as I do about my excuse for a dog. He's worth about a $5.00
on a good day but I'd spend a fortune on the stupid mutt if he needed some work.

I tried not to bond with the wagon but it got me anyway.<g> That's why I
had to stop driving the Black Avanti. I was starting to think "Gee, the AC sure
blows cold and this interior cleaned up real nice, maybe......"

Those of you may recall that my budget for restoring the $1200 Dirty Bird was
10K. After I decided on the $1800 Phantom interior I knew I needed great chrome,
great chrome needs great paint, great paint needs..... I'm now shooting for 20K
but at least it'll be a better than a new car when it's done. These things have a
way of spinning out of control.<g>

NOt stupid to do right by something historically significant.
Not stupid to invest in something you enjoy.

If life was ONLY a matter of coming out ahead financially, it' would
indeed be a boring life!

Whatever I put into my "Boring" non-flash-mobiles, I get back
manyfold thru my enjoyment of them! I don't even keep track of how

My old college room mate has a '63 Buick scattered all over his house. I
stay with him each time I go to the Chicasha swap meet. I'm not sure if
that's what caused the demise of his marriage, but I think it was a factor.

Fish-eyes, eh? I sure hate to hear that, Bob. Decent words can't describe
how that makes me feel. Any chance of restitution? Not that the emotional
stress can be undone, but sentanceing should include restitution!

My sister-in-law owns an auto paint supply business, and I have helped her
mix paint at times. So many formulas, so little room for error. Everything
has to be so exact, I'm not sure that any two seperate mixes will always be
exactly the same. I also believe that conditions at the time of application
can make some difference in paint flow, dry time, etc., which seems to
affect how one panel painted later looks next to one painted before. I
don't know of anything else I do that has more things that can go wrong than
painting cars. Police work and parenting are close, though. <G>

Dave,

To answer your questions, the wagon has been in a holding pattern
for months since I've been anticipating the set-up of our shop
building where I could place the car and not have to worry about
covering it up each night or concern myself about sifting and shifting
thru various boxes of parts I have from it and for it. The guest

bedroom is FULL of stuff for this wagon. Newly upholstered seats,
freshly painted interior trim, NOS door panels (Thanks to Lee
DeLaBarre) and many other things including the sliding roof panel with
headliner section and new weatherstrip installed.

Well, it's gonna move into the shop probably by next weekend (hard
to type with fingers crossed!) I hope.........

As to the ragtop, it's getting it's THIRD attempt at getting

painted as I type this. The first attempt was scuttled by a
revenge-seeking employee of the shop where the LArk sat while waiting
for it's spray-job (He sprayed Armour-All all over the body shop and
consequently, it trashed the paint application on the Lark !)

The second attempt was ruined by the fact that the paint was not
matched correctly. (Too involved to explain the details but it's hard
to say who's to blame for this flub !)

Like I said, the third application is under way today. I even spent
this morning helping to prep it yet again. That's why I have my
fingers crossed. It's getting expensive as I used premium two-stage
paint.

The shop, like I said, is now up and useable. It still needs some
finishing which I will be starting on this week. But already I've
started to move heavy tools ( Hydraulic press, Steam cleaner, etc..)
out to the shop so as to move towards the goal of turning the garage
back into a place to park cars........and trucks.
I'm toying with the idea of turning the last 12 feet of the shop
into a paint booth. As my luck would have it, I found out about a
genuine, honest-to-gosh paint booth that just sold for the grand sum
of ONE (1) Dollar !!!!! And it could have been mine if only I'd known
of the sale! MAkes me ill to think about it really.

As soon as my body-guy, Rick is ready to start on another project,
he's gonna prep and shoot the 63 Daytona that will recieve the R3
block I'm refreshing.

Rick's been anxious to do the 51 Biz coupe so I may let him have at
it when he finishes with the 63. We'll have to see if there's anything
left in the bank account!

Of course.........there waits a 57 Silver Hawk and a 49 BIG truck as
well...........(sigh).........

I got screwed because the painter used a primer that was supposed to "vent"
24-48 hours, painted it when was dry to touch, bubbled and blistered top coat,
can still smell epoxy primer when sanding or scraping off paint. I did not
want white anyway, "her" idea. Told her if God wanted car to be white the
paint would have had a show room finish <G> Needless to say I did not hesitate
on jumping on John P's HVLP triple turbine paint unit, now I can proudly say I
boogered it up myself <G>

that is just about flawless ! It's gonna buff out to something
WAAAAAAAY better than what it had when it was new.

You'll be having as much fun as I am shortly. Every time you add a
trim piece you'll step back and admire it. The scary part it banging on
the trim clips. I'm adding a little body shutz to each clip in hopes of
sealing each clip hole.

It's a brush on rubber like sealer. You see it on fender seams for example.

YES! is right Dave. John, I know what you mean about the
"stand-back-and-admire" factor. It's always fun.
I remember putting all the brightwork back on this same car some 14
years ago. :
Add a piece......stand back and look......look from
several different angles...........call wife out to look.......collar
any neighbors to take a look. ( I do have a couple that actually
appreciate the results of my efforts.)

And, yes, the blood pressure CAN be elevated with each clip you slap
to seat. I try to put rags or such under where the loose ends of a
given trim piece are as I work my way along. It's a bit time-consuming
but it beats a scratch in the fresh paint by a long shot.

Calvin, I went to the paint store to see if they had the formula for
the Yellow on this Lark. The guy opened the old paint chip book to the
page tabbed "Studebaker" and the whole damn page was solid yellow!

We have a real nice old car swap meet here in Prescott, Arizona. The first
week end in August. It pulls in some out of staters (venders). We have a
nice display of antique engines, the stuff with one or two cylinders and big
fly wheels, a real nice mix of old cars for sale and for show. Plus a real
good parts exchange with a lot of foot traffic. I take this opportunity to
try and turn some of my accumulation of parts for this and that into cash. I
usually have some Studebaker parts for sale so I get people who want to talk
Studebaker. A man stopped by that said he had a 60 Hawk he wanted to sell.
This is what he said:
"I was told it was the last of the finned Hawks a 1960. It's a Silver Hawk,
the brakes have been rebuilt. Its a 289 automatic and runs fine, you could
drive it away with a new battery. Basically it is a sound car with a few
rust bubbles here and there in the paint and around the trunk lid because of
a bad trunk rubber seal. The interior is not very good and would need to be
replaced. It has been setting a lot and I would like to sell it.
I am asking $3500."
He said his name was Will Harwood and I have his number. I anyone is
interested I can give you his number. I would be glad to take a look at it
for someone, I am in Phoenix every other week.

P.S. you better contact me at my e-mail address because I don't check the
news group every day.

It'd be great if you could get pictures or at least a
detailed "non-owner" description.

Some days I want a '61 Hawk, some days a '60 Hawk... now if
this was just the biggest decision I had to make.
