Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine just announced a contest for
"Muscle Machine of the Year" in the new, October 2005 edition I got in
today's mail as a subscriber. They picked 24 Muscle Cars on which they
have reported since the magazine began, and are soliciting reader votes
from among those 24, for "Muscle Machine of The Year."

The only Studebaker in the list is Car #11; Nelson Bove's 1964 R3
Commander 2-door they reviewed last year. (Groan...they identified it
as a 1963 model!) Oh, well.

You can vote on line at this dedicated website:

www.hemmings.com/mmoy

Scroll down to the photo and brief description of Nelson's car. Click
on the little circle by his car and then hit SUBMIT. That's all!

Or votes can be snail-mailed to:

Thanks, we have a real shot. We have a very strong net presence, and
there is ony one Studebaker on the list and it won't split up the votes
like the brand X guys.

Meet the only steel-bodied R3 Super Lark ever to leave a South Bend
assembly line

I am not very educated on the Lark line of cars, but the sentence above with
the wording "steel bodied"
confuses me. Were there fiberglass Larks produced at sometime before the
shut down.

No, Billy; that refers to the total number of R3-powered cars that were
assembled in South Bend. Studebaker assembled TEN R3-powered cars in
South Bend: Nine Avantis and one "steel-bodied" car, Nelson's R3
Commander, here being voted on. Another way to say it would be to say
it's the only R3-powered car assembled in South Bend that was not an
Avanti. No R3 Hawks were built, nor were any other R3
"Larks." BP

Well....there ARE a lot of deceased Studebaker enthusiasts who would
certainly vote for Nels' car if given the oppportunity posthumously....
and we don't like to forget anyone who's "gone before....."

Good observation, John. The AMC folks have only one entry, too, but
considering how few of them show up at The Pure Stock Drags,
I wonder how interested they are. BP

I voted for it too. Sheesh, they not only called it a '63, but a
"Lark" instead of "Commander"! I guess in the early brochures they did
call them "Lark Commanders"!

Technically, Studebaker referred to all Lark types with the super
package as "Super larks." , even in 64.
