I am getting a little too much lifter ticking, so I need to adjust the
valves on my 62 Hawk. The only instructions I have are for doing the
adjustment with the engine running, but I have heard that it can be
done without it running. If it can be done, do any of you good folks
out there in Studedom have written instructions for doing it without
the engine running?

Thanks,

Paul

I always adjust valves cold. I repeat the procedures three times to
increase accuracy. I hate getting the ceiling dirty with splashed oil
as a result of hot valve adjustments.

Just follow the shop manual's instructions for cold adjustments.

If you have your damper marked in fourths, it makes it much easier to adjust
the valves without the engine running. You can start with number one on
compression and go right down the line in firing order by bumping the engine
over a quarter turn at a time. Just warm the engine up good first. You might
want to do one side, then warm it up again and do the other side.

Are there many guys out there that would be interested in a simple tool where
you could use a dial indicator to really get the lash dead on? Even if you
have worn rocker tips, this would still let you set them right on the money.
Malcolm Berry has made a tool to do this and I imagine he would make them
pretty reasonable. Let me know how many might want one and I'll check with him
and see what he says. If there is enough interest, I imagine he could have
them at the South Bend swap meet and at the International meet.

Gord, do you want to split the cost of one and put it in the Foothills Club
tool chest for everyone to use?

Well, since I'm an FNG here, I don't know what you all consider the
definition of "reasonable" to be, (and as I've found in my limited
dealings with Studebaker people, just about anything for a Stude can
be considered reasonable), but I'm definately interested in getting
one. I am going to adjust the valves on my Hawk tomorrow, so I wish I
had it now.

I've been "lurking" out here for a few weeks, getting some good Stude
tips and enjoying the stories and the banter. It seems like you all
have a pretty good time, so I'm glad I dropped in.

Thanks for the info posted in this thread, and thanks to those that
sent e-mail, as well.

Paul,
Welcome to our little community! We're glad you stepped out of the
shadows stuck your hand up. Tell us about your Hawk and where you hail from.
We're always eager to hear about another Stude or fellow Stude lover. Do
tell - Do tell!

Ted,

I'd like one of these tools also. Let me know if you have them made
up. I'll be at the International Meet and could pick it up there.

These used to be made commercially. My Dad was a mechanic and had one of these.
I've used it many times over the years. Somewhere around here I have a note with
the manufacturer and model number. The tool is still in Dad's shop, which is a
day's drive from my place, so I can't just go look at it to get the info. If I
find the info I'll send it to you.
