I spent a couple of hours at the PPG Paint Store trying to find out
what Chadron and Shoshone Red actually look like. It has been a LONG
time since I actually saw these colors on a car.

The man at the store gave me the formulas and showed me the colors on
the computer monitor. On the computer, it just looks like water colors
to me. Does anyone have a good picture of one or hopefully both of
these colors on a Studebaker that you could share with me?

I get scared whenever they computer match paint codes to old chips, etc...
I had a Blaze Red Hawk come out orange once.....
Since then I have taken my paint chip sample and matched it to current paint
chips...by eye...
And then have a second, or third set of eyeballs confirm the match...

According to my Dupont "Duco" Colour Bulletins,
Shoshone Red (Dark Red + Fast Red + White) is sort of a deep burgundy
and Chadron Red (Dark Red + Light Red + White + Fast Red + Black) is a
shade lighter then Cherokee Red with the slightest hint of orange to it.

Momz described these as I'm not always reliable with shades of red, but
Cherokee Red sits nicely a shade darker the Chadron Red and a shade
lighter then Shoshone Red.

Making a JPG of these sheets will do little good, due to color variances
in scanners, video cards, monitors, and the lossy nature of JPGs.

The Color Sheets are common on EBay.

Paul.

On my monitor, the Shoshone Red is lighter then the paint chips actually
look on my sample. The Chadron Red is spot on though.

And being 15% colorblind won't help either <g>

Ever take the test for colorblindness?
Jeff (the test alone will make you colorblind..) Rice

I've taken a color blindness tests, I think my version is called
Protanomaly . I score pretty low in the reds. I can discriminate
something like 80 shades of red, where as most women can do 180-200 and
trained individuals (artists and the such) can see up to 260 shades or
better

But, I have awesome night vision, and I think that makes up for poor
perception of Reds.

Hello Richard,

Take a look at Alan & Cathy Mende's '54 Commander in the photo section of
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/studebaker-drivers/. We had it
painted Shoshone Red with a Sandusky Beige top. The shop matched color
samples from a 1954 Studebaker brochure showing available colors.

Kindest regards,

Alan Mende
Hummelstown, Pa

PS: Try contacting Fred Smoyer at Antique and Classic Restorations
(610)-767-8012. He painted the car, so he probably has the formula.

Alan,
I went to the link to "see" your car. The only way Yahoo lets you see the
photos is if you join.
Thanks again for the help packing up at Hershey!

Alan,

I saw the picture of your car with the Shoshone Red and Sandusky Beige
top. Do you happen to have a picture of the finished car? I really
like the color in the picture.

Regards,
Richard
