What's the deal with the sudden change of drivers in the Nitro Fish camp?
Seemed like Phil Burkhart was set to run pretty good this year, and then out of
no where, Todd Paton is announced as the team driver.....I could use a horrid
pun here, like something being "fishy", but I won't. Anyone know what's up?

There was a story on NHRA online about it. It's supposed to be a one race deal,
I think. Burkhart had other obligations or something like that,

Found this on NHRA Online.....

Bob Weickgenannt will be at the wheel of Gary and Paul Richards' Oldsmobile
Funny Car this weekend at the 31st annual Mac Tools Gatornationals. Gary
Richards, a longtime veteran fuel tuner and owner, tapped Weickgenannt this
week to pilot the car.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to drive the Richards car," said
Weickgenannt. "Any time you get an opportunity to drive one of these cars, it's
a good thing."
Weickgenannt began the season at the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals at the
wheel of Bill Blomgren's Geronimo entry, but the team did not plan on attending
the Gatornationals. Ironically, the spot in the Richards car opened up because
Todd Paton, who was slated to drive the car at the Gatornationals, accepted a
ride in the NitroFish car beginning in Gainesville.
The Richards car is an Oldsmobile-bodied chassis that was last run at the
Autofest 2000 event in Florida over the New Year holiday. This will be the
first NHRA national event for the team with this car, and it's anticipated that
Richards will be working with a Paul Smith tune-up in the car to begin the
weekend.
============================

From the words "beginning in Gainesville" does sound like Paton is in the car
for the remainder.

What do you think?

Greg...from what I've heard from some "inside" sources is that there is/was
"bad blood" between Burkhart and the Nitrofish crew chief, whoever that is.
ie, the 2 didn't get along and it looks like said crew chief won out.
Whoever came up with the stupid name of Nitrofish is the one that ought to
be canned!<g>

Careful now what you call a stupid name. My puppy dog is named Nitro Fish
and she fits the name very well. She is nitro on four paws; quick off the
mark with a great reaction time to any item thrown. She occasionally blows
the paws up into smoke as she makes too quick a stop while trying to make a
turn. She has done a blowover when being too aggressive in running for an
item.

I think the Nitro fish name popped into someone's head after Dean Skuza
gave a ride to some guy's Goldfish at Maple Grove a few years back. A
crewman for Force drew a picture of what he thought the fish must have
looked like on that ride and it all just kind of grew from there. At least
that's the story I heard.

I was in Topeka in 95 when Dean Skuza gave the famous goldfish a ride. NHRA
said no more after that. So I think the fish ride was a one time only deal.

As to Nitrofish, I heard that it was one of Force's crew that made up the
name. My understanding was that a lot of crude oil comes from VERY OLD
rotten fish deposits. Therefore Nitro mush come from Nitrofish. Not too
sure on that one though.

Mark and the gang
The thought that fuel comes from decaying animal/plant life is all but dead
however we are still referring to fuels as "fossil fuels". The "other" theory
is called the a-biogenic theory and the IHRA weekly magazine did a very nice
multi-page write-up about this several weeks (months?) ago. I just went and
looked for it but couldn't find my copy. The thing that frustrates ecology
types about the a-biogenic theory is that it theorizes that we have thousands
of times more oil that we thought we did under the fossil-fuel (biogenic)
theory.

I Noticed this past weekend the Nitro Fish T-shirt trailer had Burkhart's
name scratched off.

i was in topeka when skuza's infamous "gold/nitro" fish ride occurred......we
agreed that we would let the "free world" know this had happened if and only if
the darn fish survived...(i gotta believe that nhra today had the exculsive on
this accomplishment, but please....correct me if i am wrong).........
well......as you....and i would hopefully agree......we could tell that not
only had the fish survived, (based on the fact that half of the jug was filled
with fish poop)..... but that he had experienced something that you and i can
only dream of.......
however of the efforts of the fan provoked goldfish ride........
i am the firm belief that it had no bearing on the nitrofish concept.......
but hey...........
what do i know????
