Heard a report that Jim Dunn fired Al Hofmann just before the 3rd round of
funny car qualifying at Gainsville. Can anyone verify and/or add some
details?

Looks like the 2 "grumpy old men" of drag racing...Jim Dunn and Al
Hofmann...have parted ways. After watching the story unfold on ESPN II this
evening, Dunn stated, rather off handedly, t

Looks like the unlikely partnership of the 2 "grumpy old men" of drag racing
has come to an end. Apparently, Hofmann broke some of Dunn's rules, whatever
that means! Sure would like to hear more about this. Looks like Bruce Sarver
may have picked up a ride.

hmmmm....i heard from a really really reliable source..........that the
"situation" involved an "alledged" accusation involving densham wanting the K &
N ride...(ya got me ??!! ).......al confronting gary about it............and
jim dunn being unhappy about al's actions

talked to bruce (b4 i heard of al's demise) and bruce said the toyata body
will "hopefully" be ready by vegas.......

i think this could be an interesting change of events.........

happy st patty's day all........

Now this one I can't believe, reliable source or not! Densham wanted
to leave the Force team? The team that has given him his first two
wins, a car that is running consistently faster than others, and the
pole at the Gators? I seriously doubt this! I like Gary. I like him
to much to believe he's that stupid! Somehow I don't think John's
drivers are underpaid or are not part of the team, so what would the
reasoning be to leave?

Ken...I'm having a hard time buying into this theory also. Why would Densham
want to leave a dream setup and go work for an old grump. Densham's too old
and too smart to be on some kind of ego trip. I'm not dumping on Dunn! He's
a drag racing icon, but you gotta' admit, he's not exactly Mr. Happy. I'm
sure he's a real hard-ass to work for. We'll have to see how this plays out.

Be that as it may be, WHY would Gary do this? What would be the up
side to this move? Nothing against Dunn, he's hard working and tries
hard to put it together, but that team is not the Force team, in
material, personnel or money; so why would a reasonable, seasoned pro
like Gary want to flip? Because he wanted to be the #1 driver? After
years of being cannon fodder? (and I ain't talking Scotty here) He
is, by his own admission, in the best car he's ever had. He has the
best crew he's ever had. Unless he is being paid such a low wage he
needs more to meet the bills, the move doesn't make sense!

That being said, there's NO guarantee that sources will tell you the truth
at any given moment in time. They may not be technically "Lying" but even if
you are talking to the parties involved, you may get a little "skew" from
time to time.

I'll bet Gary would drive Force's car for free. This whole thing
about Gary and Dunn makes no sense to me.

Mark.

Did you catch Mike Dunn's comments? Two of them were really funny. At first
he said something to the effect of, "Yeah, I know all about those team rules."
And then on Sunday as they showed Jim pulling Al's name off of the body he
said, "You would think the old man would have used Velcro so he could remove
the name quicker." That was very funny (to me).

Ken......
I do not know......... It could be a lot of different things.......... Maybe he is
not getting paid enough? Does not get along with his boss? Maybe he has seen that the
move has some kind of promise that he will wind up with a better ride in the future? I
guess we will all have to wait and see and maybe the truth will come out in the weeks
to come.

Heheh...Okay, I got it the FIRST time! No need for three replies!
<g>

Bottom line is that may be why Dunn was upset. It was a rumor and Al
went off half cocked. I don't know that though, so we'll wait and see
what develops.

i agree jim........and trust me everyone, i found the densham/dunn thing hard
to swallow too.....but hey, i didnt make this up to have something to type
about....

to quote others who have driven for the dunn's, some of those team rules
include no drinking, no leaving the dunn's pit on raceday and no socializing
with the other racers.......

ya ever notice how al stopped stirring it up with the other racers (esp. force)
since teaming up with the dunn's ?? i hope the hofmann we know and love
resurfaces with his own deal and his own dime......and his own
demeanor..........

i just dont think it'll happen anytime soon....

That was funny. I wonder if we'll see much of Hofmann anytime soon. I don't
know how he will take to driving for someone else again(surprised this one
lasted that long) and not sure if he still has the car he used to drive? IIRC
last time he drove his own car it was on Helen's wallet and thats out of the
picture now.

I'll never forget, last yr or yr before at E-Town(the year that Cristen Powells
driving his car was done with).
Well, rumors were circulating about Casey Powell sueing the Hofmanns. So I saw
Al standing there alone on Sunday morning and figured what the hell.

Me: "I've heard some rumors about a lawsuit against you from the Powells, is
this true, and can you comment about it?"
Al said something to the effect of: "Sure I can comment. Basically, Daddy's
little fat girl is pissed off because she can't drive"

and like one other thing I can't remember......right after I heard the first
part I was pissing my pants as I couldn't believe he said that to me(just a
lowly fan)!!! But I did think it was pretty cool.......someone in the biz that
doesn't say the normal pre-programmed, afraid of getting in trouble lines.
