i just bought a used '96 saab 900S. and even though it has a "CD"
button on the main console, my car did not come with a CD changer in
the back.
i would like to get one, but do not know which kind/brand is
compatible with this saab model and year, where i should be looking,
or how much it would be for the CD changer and installation.
does anyone have any experience with this?
i look forward to your reply...

Any Clarion "C-Bus" 6-disc changer will work. Known good ones are the
CDC-634/CDC-635 and the DC-625 (NOT DC-625z!). The factory changer option
was a CDC-605. The advantage of using the 605 (if you can find one) is
that the newer Clarions don't fit into the Saab changer mounting cage.
Most people find pretty reasonable ways of mounting the newer Clarions,
though.
See http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/faq/cdchangerng900.html
and http://www.saabnet.com/sites/richard.bevan/
for more info.

1. make sure you have your radio's security code
2. With car and radio off unplug the CD Changer
3. Turn on car and radio
4. Remove the fuses for the radio (located on left corner of dash inside
of driver's door - fuse #11 and #13 )
5. turn off car and then restart... radio won't work
6. Turn off car, replace fuse, restart. Turn on radio and enter radio
security code. (make sure your radio now works). Turn off radio and shut off
car.
7. plug in CD Changer
8. Start car and turn on radio - It should now recognize the CD Changer.

How stable is it mounted that way, with only velcro? I'm wondering if you will
be having a lot of skips when you go over uneven spots or divider buttons in the
road.
If this doesn't work send the RADIO (not the changer) to Clarion and a
check for $110. It will work when it comes back to you.

PS You are right about being careful for something not to run into it ...

It's not actually velcro that comes with them, it's a pretty sticky
double-sided tape gunk. On my car I mounted it to the metal with the tape
and drilled holes through the upholstery to poke the mounting holes
through. I've never had it skip once.

So you can use any cd changer? I thought you had to use one of the
SAAB specific ones that cost about 600 dollars? Or is it that if you
use another one, you need a separate control for it, that it cannot be
controlled by the buttons on the radio thats already in the car?
it would be really great if you could post pictures/instructions on
your website and list the URL here. that would be a lot of help for
people like me with no handiwork skill whatsoever...thanks in advance!
