to whom it may concern,

i just bought a used '96 saab 900S. and even though it has a "CD"
button on the main console, my car did not come with a CD changer in
the back.

i would like to get one, but do not know which kind/brand is
compatible with this saab model and year, where i should be looking,
or how much it would be for the CD changer and installation.

does anyone have any experience with this?

i look forward to your reply...

Any Clarion "C-Bus" 6-disc changer will work. Known good ones are the
CDC-634/CDC-635 and the DC-625 (NOT DC-625z!). The factory changer option
was a CDC-605. The advantage of using the 605 (if you can find one) is
that the newer Clarions don't fit into the Saab changer mounting cage.
Most people find pretty reasonable ways of mounting the newer Clarions,
though.

See http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/faq/cdchangerng900.html

If when putting in the CD Changer the Head unit does not recognize it try
the following. There evidently was a know problem with the Head units
computer memory and the follow needs to be performed for it to recognize the
changer.

1. make sure you have your radio's security code
2. With car and radio off unplug the CD Changer
3. Turn on car and radio
4. Remove the fuses for the radio (located on left corner of dash inside
of driver's door - fuse #11 and #13 )
5. turn off car and then restart... radio won't work
6. Turn off car, replace fuse, restart. Turn on radio and enter radio
security code. (make sure your radio now works). Turn off radio and shut off
car.
7. plug in CD Changer
8. Start car and turn on radio - It should now recognize the CD Changer.

I just bought a CDC635 made by Clarion last week from The Wiz in my
neighborhood for $148. Pulled the factory cable that was tucked behind the
antenna motor under the trunk upholstery, plugged it in, glued the mounting
brackets with the double sided tape that was included and was done in about
40 minutes. Pretty cool! $60 for the factory mounting bracket?! ... no
thanks ...

How stable is it mounted that way, with only velcro? I'm wondering if you will
be having a lot of skips when you go over uneven spots or divider buttons in the
road.

If this doesn't work send the RADIO (not the changer) to Clarion and a
check for $110. It will work when it comes back to you.

NO SKIP PROBLEMS AT ALL. I'm driving on New York City streets that have some
of the worst pavement and the biggest potholes I have ever seen and I have
never heard it skipping yet. Further more ALL of the CD's that I am using
are copies made on my computer at home and work just fine in the changer.
The mounting DOES NOT use any Velcro but rather a very strong double sided
tape. I have mounted the brackets under the upholstery directly onto the
metal, than just made small holes in the upholstery for the mounting screws.
When the upholstery is put back in place it pushes down on the brackets and
all that is seen are the four mounting screws sticking up. Than I just
placed the cd changer and secured it with the wingnuts. The mounting tape is
very strong yet it absorbs some vibrations, it has a rating of 2 lb per
sq.in. so make certain that you measure the exact spot for the brackets or
else you'll have a very hard time taking it off. Also make sure that the
position selectors are set to vertical otherwise it will skip. If you'd like
let me know and I can post some pictures on my website that can show exactly
what I am describing above and help you with the installation. In the end it
looks very clean and professionally installed and it most certainly does not
use any Velcro to secure anything. I am however thinking about getting the
cd changer bag from the Saab catalog. I think it will look very nice and
give it that factory touch.

PS You are right about being careful for something not to run into it ...

It's not actually velcro that comes with them, it's a pretty sticky
double-sided tape gunk. On my car I mounted it to the metal with the tape
and drilled holes through the upholstery to poke the mounting holes
through. I've never had it skip once.

So you can use any cd changer? I thought you had to use one of the
SAAB specific ones that cost about 600 dollars? Or is it that if you
use another one, you need a separate control for it, that it cannot be
controlled by the buttons on the radio thats already in the car?

alex,

it would be really great if you could post pictures/instructions on
your website and list the URL here. that would be a lot of help for
people like me with no handiwork skill whatsoever...thanks in advance!
