Greetings,

A strange warning light is ON in my Saab 900 Hatchback '84 situated in
the upper right corner of the instrument panel. The light bears the
inscription "EXH" which leads me to believe it has something to do
with the exhaust system. Strangely cannot find the right information
in my car booklet nor in the Hayes Manual.

Anyone care to explain? What does it mean and which steps should I
take?
Appreciate your help, thank you beforehand.

Regards
Emmanuel from Munich

Odd. I thought only the US models used the EXH light.

For Saabs intended for the US market the EXH light was installed due
to some US requirement that the oxygen sensor had to be replaced after
a certain distance. It turned out that the life of the oxygen sensors
was longer than feared and today the light is just a nuisance.

Perhaps this page will give you some usefull information:

I don't know what the light is doing in a Saab on the German market.
Perhaps your Saab is US spec or Saab used the EXH light for something
completely different on German spec cars?

Oxygen (02) sensor. Time to replace. Easy enough - sits on the exhaust
downpipe after the manifold, before any catalytic converter.

It means you have to replace your oxygen sensor. If, after replacement, the
light is still on, there's probably a mileage counter which needs to be
reset...

Don't know where it is on the '84 Saab, but on many VW products, the mileage
counter is a black box connected inline with the speedometer cable.

Not that I am all that familiar with cars in the German market, but I
understand that there were a few years when catalyst equipped cars were
available as an option. Saab may very well have just equipped the cars with
the US spec emissions systems for people electing to buy a catalyst equipped
car.

(Sorry for the previous partial, duplicate posts. I am using a Windows
