Hi,
The 53 Buick Special was the smallest of the buicks for that year. a
typical
2 door sedan weighed in at around 3700 lbs and had the straight 8 cyl
overhead valve engine of, if memory serves, 264 cubic inches. Power was
around 165
hp. The bigger cars
had the all new V8 for 53. You could get the special with either a 3 speed
manual
or the Dynaflo. This particular Dynaflo did not have the variable stator
setup of the later
buicks, but was still not a half bad performer. It had a low and a drive
range. For
real performance, you could manually shift this baby. Starting out in low,
then shifting to
drive once over 20 - 25 mph. But, this does put a bit of a strain on the
front seal.
The specials normally had manual brakes and steering, but power was an
option.
53 was the last of the thick toothed grill Buicks (54 having very thin
'teeth' which looked
more like a grill then teeth) and probably the most memorable of the 'road
eaters".
53 to me, is one of the coolest looking Buicks, and the ultimate is the
Skylark convertable.
A truely stunning car and very very sought after. My brother had a 53
special 4 door. These
are very reliable cars, and Buick straight and V8 engines were probably the
best engines
made in the 50's. When all the rest were eating cams, puking and burning
oil, or overheating on a regular basis, Buicks just kept running and
running. We also had a 55 Special and it too was a great running car.If you
want a 50's car, you cannot go wrong with a Buick.
