How about a physical description, like valve size, and any marks on
front edge of the casting, like, are they one point on top of a
rectangle, or double humps, etc. also, drilled for accessories, etc.

If I remember correctly, the 889s are what we called "triple step" heads
from the early seventies. Drilled for accessories, three "steps" on one
end, two on the other. 1.94 x 1.5, 76cc chambers. The chambers are
large, but the ports are of decent size and shape. They flow fairly well
actually. With a proper bowl blend these castings will make surprising
power for OEM smog heads.

3886889 .... nice string of easily misread characters. Probably actually
3986339 '71 307 heads, 1.72/1.50 75cc. Not Go Fast Stuff.

There were castings ending in 889. They were common on early seventies
two barrel 350s.

I must be loosing my feeble little mind. I've been looking through my
casting number list, and I can't find any 889s either. I could have
sworn the OEM heads that came on my 71 Nova 2BBL 350 were 889s. I spent
many hours learning proper porting techniques grinding on that pair, so
I spent a good bit of time looking at them. Was it all just a dream?....
:-)
I'm beginning to wonder. Well, it WAS almost twenty years ago. :-)

no, it wasn't just a dream, I have a pair of 889's on my old truck,
cant tell you what vehicle they came off of, I had a hard time finding
the numbers too, but i did. and it seems like they came off of 307, and
350's. low power good gas mileage heads.

Well, It's good to know that if I *AM* loosing my mind, I have company.
:-)
Thanks Ricky,
