I'm going to be stationed in Germany next July and wanted to buy a mid
70's 911 and restore it. I'll be there for 3 years. I was just wondering
if anyone has any tips or suggestions? I was looking to spend around
$5000 american for the car.

Thanks,
Jeff Freeman

Hi Jeff,
i would think, that $5000 will be a little bit too less, for Porsches over
here.

They go over every inch of an older car with a fine tooth comb before
it is even allowed to be registered in Germany. I would imagine you'd
pay twice that, but it'd be a better chance of having a solid car than
here in the hack-shop-filled US. Maybe you could buy one that needs
lots of work there, and not intend to drive it until it is "done", or
ship it to the US or something. They will actually be under the car
with a pointed hammer making sure there is not any tiny rusted areas
before it is allowed on the road, so driving cars are usually in good
condition, from what I understand. I have no first-hand Germany
knowlege, so I could be wrong.

Good luck,

I think you are right about "They will actually be under the car with a
pointed hammer ..." !
I live in Belgium (next to Germany), the "technical control" over here is
VERY severe (they also use a hammer...), and it is generaly now that it is
worse in Germany.

I've made a number of trips to Germany with long lists of parts I've
needed to rebuild my various "project" Porsches, but rarely have I found
many bargains.

For example (and this is a slightly dated example) in searching for 944
fuel pumps, the Frankfurt price for a Bosch OEM pump was close to the
equivalent of 200 USD while I was able to locally obtain an identical
Bosch pump (German-made, not from Brazil) in Northern California for
approx 125 USD.

I've heard similar stories from others. So buy your 911 project car in
rust-free California and then ship this car (presumably at taxpayer
expense) to Germany. Fill the trunk with spares from places like
Automotion or a local BAP/GEON distributor. And buy your petrol at the
PX.

I've just recently returned from Germany after about 20 months in
the
Stuttgart area. I found prices for Porsches (both new and used
cars)
to be higher there than in the US. Your initial post suggested
to me
that you might be an employee of Uncle Sam. If so, wouldn't he
pay
to ship your automobile to Germany and then back home when you
return?

he will, but only one car, and we're taking my wife's civic. We were thinking of
getting one there before we left and shipping it back. Someone sent me a link to a
german used car search engine, and I saw some for around $10,000. I would have to
convert it to american specs ( speedometer and such) but that's ok. It's not
definate when I'll get one, we're still researching it.
