the universal joint of the steering gear (where it attaches to the rack, easy to see) is rusty and appears not to have any grease on it. I was thinking about putting white lithium grease on it because I think the temperature might melt other greases - also WLG works on the headlamp retractor linkages. was also concerned about dripping/splashing grease that could damage e.g. the rack.

you can use that, the original grease was just regular grease. Grease
won't hurt the rack, but at around 150 to 200K miles it will start to
leak and require a rebuild - not hard, but a bit fiddly to get it out.

from what I recall, the universal joint at the top of the bar near the steering wheel is not easy to get at - any hints how to get the grease up there and not on everything else?

I never greased one, and one of my 944s has over 250K miles.
