Drive shaft, clutch or transmission ?
1986 944 86k
I get a "clunking" noise from below then I let out the clutch peddle and
accelerate - sometimes.
It happens only once per shift, and not always. Thereafter the car
accelerates normally, with no other odd sounds

Check that connection joint of the driveshaft at the transmission end. That
has to be super tight I am told.
Not sure how the engine is with the thrust bearings and if they can wear
down allowing the crankshaft to move front to rear.
Check your engine mounts and bellhousing mounting bolts to the engine.
Check the large rear wheel nuts in the rear.

90% chance it's the clutch - rubber has failed, soon the stop will
fail and you will be stuck. there is an inspection port on side of
bell housing - sometimes you can see rubber fragments in the bell
housing. I've never had the coupling go bad, but I've had clutches on
multiple cars go bad, and a clunk is a clear warning sign
