87 944S, odometer, etc

Just took out for summer driving fun, it has not been used for 2 years. It
has 157,000 on odometer. These problems were not present when last driven,
nor from 2002 when acquired Gas gauge showed full and about 15 miles on the
trip meter. After about 200 miles on the trip meter the gas gauge was still
above 2/4 but the reserve light came on, it took just over 18 gal. As I was
leaving the gas sta. I pushed the trip reset and later notice the odometer
nor the trip meter are working. However the speedometer is working.

Question: is the gas gauge faulty or is it the sending unit? Is there a
replaceable plastic gear in the Speedo head that has broken? What is the
procedure for the necessary repair?

1. there is a plastic gear that costs $24 that you need to replace - if you
work carefully it's easy. search web for "944 speedometer gear"
