Hi,

I have just subscribed to the group.

I have owned my 1990 944 S2 for over 5 years with no problems.

However if the car stands for more than 3 days without being started the
battery is dead.

The car is fitted with a Thatcham 1 immobiliser but surely it cannot drain
the battery that quickly?

I have replaced the battery, checked alternator etc.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same trouble and could advise
the remedy.

Ashley,
I have no experience with that exactly, but speaking from an electronic
troubleshooting point of view, I would suspect the immobiliser before I
would start digging into anything else. Best thing to do is take it to a
mechanic that really knows how to troubleshoot electronic problems. There
is a way (and they should know this) to trace the drain. It won't be cheap,
and they'll probably have the car for a while. And, oh yes, never rule out
the battery, even if it's brand new.

Hope this helps some,
Michael

Try disconnecting the immobilizer for three days. If it starts, that was the
problem.

Hi,

Here is what I would do:

Connect the battery through a current meter(10A). It may show over 500mA
load. Now, start disconnecting fuses and the draining fuse should be
found quite easily. :)

Yep, I have the same problem and suspect the vehicle's security system. I
would try bypassing the security system to see if it helps.

I have an 89 Turbo S that sufferred from the same problem.

A month or so ago the thatcham immobiliser fitted gave up the ghost and
stranded me.

My local specialist replaced the immobiliser and removed the factory alarm
(which was not working either) - problem seems to have gone away.

Guys.,

My 88 Turbo S has the same problem. At some stage it's had a 'Rhino' alarm
fitted but it was disconnected by the previous owner because he said it
flattened the battery. The problem is, The battery keeps going flat now
after about 3 days. I had always put it down to a dodgy fuse or something
but you guys talking about the battery drain on your cars with immobiliser's
has got me thinking..

I think I'll book mine into an auto electrician and get it sorted once and
for all.

I've finally decided that the quickest and least expensive solution is to
use a battery cutoff switch. Since my car is parked inside the garage I
don't need a live alarm or for that matter anything else juiced.
