944S vs. 944 - Is the S more troublesome? Higher maintenance? Which is the one to get?

I am shopping for a 944.
I've ruled out Turbo's as I like NA better. I've heard some folks like
regular 944's over the 944S's because the S's introduce more complex cam
chain tensioners that the 944 doesn't have.

Any thoughts from readers on if I see a nice 944S I should go for it? Or
should I go for the simpler 944?
I like to do some work myself (especially when my 911 friend is there to
prod me along - he's rebuilt his 911 motor so usually is a good source of
intrepidness).

Also - the reason I ask is I saw a 944S for sale that caught my eye. One
thing about it was it has 160K miles - recent valve job. Is that common for
that mileage?

Thanks,
JEREMY

Troublesome...no...more complex, yes. The 16V motors have the chain and the
chain tensioner, which requires service (supposedly) every 90K. 60K seems to
be a safer rule of thumb.

The trade off being about 40 more horses than the N/A. It is very nice for
the low end torque and the extra jump on the freeway.

If properly maintained, I don't see a problem with an S.

Thanks for the opinion.

I don't see a problem with that maintenance schedule and think I'd enjoy the
extra torque and jump!

Most definitely. If you are ever in San Diego, you are more than welcome to
drive my S2 and see how it feels.

it all depends on the budget you want to spend

944 type 1 from 83 till 85.5 cheap but interior looks outdated about 150
hp
944 type 2 from 85.5 till 89 bit more expensive but has a nicer interior
and other updates bit
more expensive about 150 hp
944s a type 2 with a 16 valve head. has more hp at high rpms but
torque on low
rpms same as 944 about 190 hp
944s2 has a 3 litre engine and brakes/suspension of a turbo about 2
times as expensive as a
944 type 2 or 944s about 211 hp maintenance costs factor
1.5 higher due to more
expensive brakes from 89 till 91
944turbo about 220 hp from 86 till 89
944turbos about 250 hp from 89 till 93
968 a 3 litre with vario cam about 240 hp from 92 till 94

So don't mix the 944s and 944s2. they are very different in performance.

I would not pay extra for a 944s above a 944 type 2. A 944s2 would be nice
but the costs are just a bit lower as a turbo. If you want the car for going
fast a 944s2 or 968 is the car you should look for. If you just like the
looks and never want to go faster as 120 mph a 944 type 2 is a fine car.

A 16v 'S' is definitely worth getting over an 8v, but I wouldn't pay a
premium for it, as market value has them worth about the same. Strange
really, given the extra 40 hp. I think it's down to the perceived extra
complexity, but they're no more trouble.

With any 944, service history is everything - find out why the valve job was
done. If you suspect it was due to servicing being neglected, walk away,
there are plenty more out there.

Word. And then later when da RX7 motor gives you mad problems, yo, you
can easily drop a Chevy 350 into that schiznitz. West-side!

the engine itself should need no serious maintenance for well over 250K
miles - belts and plugs and water pump, yes, clutch, yes, but pistons,
valves, etc should be fine. I did a valve job on my car to repair a stupid
mistake (rotated engine with timing belt removed - I learned a lot from
that), but it was just to change the bent valve.

No opinion of S versus non-S - if you are not a speed freak, I'd go for the
lower powered car - less stress on everything, and they all go the same
speed when stuck in traffic.
