What was the purpose for the Custom "S" ?

What was the purpose for the Custom "S"? I have a '69 2 door, the only
year they were made and I never understood what the "S" was to mean. The
car has the previous year Tempest VIN prefix and I assume that it
replaced the Tempest line that year. It is a basic 2 door sedan with a
350 2 barrell but a TH 400 auto. The rearend ratio was something like
2.73:1 originally but since has been replaced by me with a 71 GTO 3.23:1
10 bolt Safe-T-Track with the cone type limited slip gizmos. Of course
while I was stripping the Goat I grabbed the rear anti-sway bar with the
boxed control arms and the Disc brakes from the front. This has been the
most reliable car I have ever owned and I drive it daily. It looks rough
but it runs great. The car was built in Baltimore and was owned by
someone up there originally wich leads to the explanation of the rusted
quarters at all corners. It has been it an accident or two because all
four corners are bondo'd without hope. I bought some front fenders for
it once from a salvage yard. When I stripped the paint off of em I
realized I had worse than what was already on the car. These cars are
cancerous and that is too bad because they have such fine styling. When
I bought it the original 69 chrome front bumper had been swapped with a
'68 model. In my opinion the '69 bumper was wretchedly ugly. I got lucky
with a set of Firebird aluminum rims and they look pretty cool on this
old jalopy. I was curious if there are any old timers out there that
might know a little history on this old car.
