Here are a few things that you can try to further diagnose the issue:

Check the headlight sensor: Make sure that the headlight sensor is clean and functioning properly.

Check the wiring: Inspect the wiring for the headlights and reverse lights for any damage or loose connections.

Check the fuses: Make sure that the fuses for the headlights and reverse lights are not blown.

Check the relay: Check the relay for the headlights and reverse lights.

Check for codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any codes related to the headlights or reverse lights.

Check for ground connection: check the ground connection for the headlights and reverse lights

Keep in mind that these are general troubleshooting steps and it's still best to have a professional mechanic diagnose and fix the issue

It sounds like there may be an issue with the headlight switch or the reverse light switch on your 1997 Buick Century. When the headlight switch is turned on, it sends a signal to the engine computer to shut off the engine. Similarly, when the reverse light switch is activated, it also sends a signal to the engine computer to shut off the engine.
It could also be possible that there's an issue with the electrical wiring of the headlight switch or reverse light switch, which is causing a short circuit and shutting off the engine.
I would recommend checking the wiring and connections of the headlight switch and reverse light switch, and if everything appears to be in order, then it's best to get it checked by a professional mechanic. He will be able to diagnose and repair the issue.
